chasf42 Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Not sure if this is the right forum for this or not. I viewed an XE engineed SEIW at the weekend. Looked in generally good condition, some oil under the engine, squeak from the rear wheel. The car had clamshell wings and creamy/brown interior. What guide price should this type of car be? Quote
CocoPops Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Age/Milage/History/Owners etc? New parts build or recon'd? Quote
chasf42 Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Sorry should have said. I think it is a 92 kit registered in 94. It originally had a crossflow but this was replaced by an XE a few years later. It appears the engine was new or rebuilt. I can't tell if the other major parts were new or reconditioned, I did not see all the receipts. The mileage is around 10,000 and I think the curent owner is the third. Quote
chrisbin Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Have a look at the others advertised here for starters....then check the kit car mags and other sites (Findit, Pistonheads etc) But from that basic description.....somewhere between £7k and £9k depending on condition/detailed spec. etc.... Quote
chasf42 Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Is that an asking price or a relistic purchase price? I have seen a few posts talking about the down turn in prices, also a lot of cars seem to be up for sale for along time even after prices are reduced. I saw a SEI XE went for £5000 a few weeks ago and I have seen similar age Zetec cars going for around £6000. Quote
itguy Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 The wide version (SEiW)s go for more than the equivelent SEi (narrow) versions typically. 5k for the XE SEi was still a bargain, but without seeing it you don't know what condition it was in etc. As well as looking at the car when you view, look around the garage it is in... is there bottles of good quality oil lying about? What about a decent set of tools and a load of haynes manuals etc? Does the owner the car or simply drive the off it? I get just as much pleasure out of tinking with mine standing still as I do driving it Quote
kik1.6se Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I saw a SEI XE went for £5000 a few weeks ago and I have seen similar age Zetec cars going for around £6000. If it was a SEI (i.e. not wide) it will sell for less than a wide bodied car. Edited to say: I was too slow, itguy got there first Quote
chrisbin Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I'd say that realistically, its rare that any "decent" Westy's with 16V engines are sold for less than £7k. There will always be the possibility of a bargain of course... The overriding factors with regard to price are specification and condition. Age and, within reason, mileage are pretty irrelevant. IMHO Quote
chasf42 Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Thanks guys, making it seem more atractive to buy. Any idea how much to replace clamshells with cycle wings, nothing flash, presumably the main light mounts will need replacing and also wing supports. Where is the best place to buy these from? Quote
Peter Cox Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned how dark blue 1998 Xflow SEW's normally go for £14k due to their rarity. please bite, please bite, please, please Quote
jeff oakley Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 A car is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it and the market is a little depressed at the moment but wait for the sun and it will bounce back up. As with all things condition is everything, has it been looked after, does the guy know anything about it, or has he just bought it with little or no knowledge of who did what etc. Another thing is never buy the first car you have seen unless you have seen others to compare. It might be the best car in the world, but you can always go back if your viewing of others confirms it is that good.Try to take someone who knows what they are looking at like a club member to assist you. And join the club (can't belive I beat Andy to that one) get to know the guys in the area invaluble scource of knowledege and support. Swept wings can be removed but the results can be hit and miss filling in the holes left in the body tub, if you do a search there will be info on how others have done it. And when you buy one service it straight away so you will get to know it a bit better and will hopefully not breakdown on your first journey. jeff Quote
