SADDLEWORTH Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Sad news, only meet him once 93 at oulton park behind the wheel of a ETCC TWR BASTOS ROVER SD1 VITESSE. Quote
Richgm Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Found childhood memories of him driving baby bertha. Last time I saw him he was sliding a nissan 200 round the hairpin at Mallory. After the racing had finished and everyone else had gone home. A great loss Quote
mikehreynolds Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Really sad loss, my Dad used to talk about him when I was younger racing firenzas and the two Berthas, saw him a couple of times at Goodwood and Silverstone, always seemed happy to chat to anyone and made for really exciting racing. One story Dad told me was when he lapped the whole field and was so far ahead that he slowed down and let a few cars go past him because he was gettin bored!! Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Got home from work last night and picked up my Motorsport News, (it comes in the post) anyway I've subscribed since 1971 In all that time I've seen all the tributes to drivers who have died Senna, Villeneueve and our own James Hunt and many other top Brits , but none like the glowing Nine page tribute to Gerry, its a measure of the man that MN should dedicate so much space to someone who was arguably Britians most entertaining Race Driver. The only tribute to come close was when the Hill Embassy team was wiped out in a plane crash Thanks Gerry, to me you were Simply the Best Quote
david.c Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 my Dad used to talk about him when I was younger racing firenzas Mine too Saw one of these 100 greatest sporting moments TV shows once where he was driving a Firenza against a Mini Cooper S and an Escort RS1600 Mk1 The 3 of them were streets ahead of the rest of the field, and were swapping places several times a lap with the Firenzas inside wheel in the air on most corners Saw him race once myself at Brands in a TVR...........definitely the most sideways guy on the track Need a few more like him David Quote

Delboy Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 The Last Great Racing Character! My greatest memory was seeing him in the bar at Snetterton in between his stints during the old Willhire 24 hour race! What a guy Del Quote

pistonbroke2 Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 At Oulton in the Firenza on a wet track .Awesome. When I went to oulton last year I was chatting to a couple of Marshals who where recruiting for the club. I asked what the perks where like. Meeting Jerry they said.Hes the most entertaining guy you could ever meet. I bet theres a few good tales about him when the book comes out. What a Loss. Quote
Martin Keene Posted April 29, 2005 Posted April 29, 2005 Truely sad, but I get a sort of warm feeling, probably not the best explanation, but you'll know what I mean, that he would more than likely not wanted to go any other way than behind the wheel of a car. Quote

Could'nt agree more. Met the man at Shelsley when he doing demonstration runs. Demos my he was more concerned about putting in a good time. During one of the Tour of Britain events Gerry was asked why he had come close to wrecking the car on the first corner, he replied that the co-driver had called a 90 right and Gerry just assumed he meant 90mph! One of the last true characters. Quote
