Major Stare Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 My wife has been summoned for Jury Service next month It is really inconvenient due to the following factors:- (1) Loss of pay, your employer does not pay you when you attend. (2) My son is in nursery 3x days a week, so dropping off and collection is a problem. Who will look after my son on the days when my wife is normally at home with him (2x days a week)? (3) I cant do this as i work 8:30-7pm 6x days a week. (4) The monies paid per day wont cover child care, time off work and travel. Anyone managed to get out of it? Anyone offer advise? Quote
JeffC Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 My missus got out of it 3 years ago... she was pregnant with high blood presure... simple ... Quote
Nick M Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I'd write them a letter based around point number 2, i.e. massively inconvenient and your child would be left on the street waiting for mum, etc. Don't stress the loss of earnings bit too much - they'll just think you're trying to wangle out of it because what they pay you is too low. BUT, it's worth doing at least once Quite an interesting experience. Quote
Arm Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I did it a few years back and it was a good experience. I thought the employer did pay you and they get to claim it back. Certainly that happens where I work. Quote
Major Stare Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 I thought the employer did pay you and they get to claim it back. Certainly that happens where I work. No, it clearly states no pay from April 5th 2005 Quote
dac3774 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Yip I got summoned for Jury Duty and did not loose out on my salary. The company took the hit or made a claim. I think you only get paid from the court if you are self employed? You can claim travel expenses, not sure about child care costs though.... Quote
Major Stare Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 My missus got out of it 3 years ago... she was pregnant with high blood presure... simple ... Blimey, that gives me 10 days to get my wife pregnant then (we have to give an appeal within 10 days)......................back i a bit Quote
Westfieldman Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I thought the employer did pay you and they get to claim it back. Certainly that happens where I work. They don't have to Tell them our child will be sat on the street waiting for you..... Quote
dac3774 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 No, it clearly states no pay from April 5th 2005 In that case everyone is gonna try and get out of it, I would if summoned again....... Quote
V 8 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I did it a few years back and it was a good experience. In the case Mason v WSCC Motorsport Ltd: Suspension pickup points shall be as per manufacturer's standard specification and no beards allowed Quote
felters Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 You can only defer service once... I got my boss to write a letter. I was summoned to serve again six weeks later. I rang up and asked what would happen if I didn't appear. They pointed out that they now knew where I worked as well as lived and arresting me wouldn't be too difficult... Actually it is an important civic duty and I now feel a bit of a sh!t for trying to wriggle out of it. Bit like giving blood. Just something we should all do. Quote
Major Stare Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 Personally i dont have a problem doing it, im sure its interesting. But we cant do it due to child care, and of cource financial reasons. If my wife doesnt show, she'll get a £1000 fine They dont make it sound very tempting and its worse than receiving a bl**** speeding ticket/fine/points. Quote
oldman Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Simply write a letter stating...she's not coming you pregnant fish Quote
