Black Shadow Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 I've been having problems getting reverse since my first SVA test but could select all the other gears with no problems, so decided to look at once I passed. Had my first look at look at today. The first thing I found when I took out the extention was that the small collar had come out so I guessed that it was that. SO I driftted that back into place and tried again. Still no luck with reverse but it seemed a bit better. Point to make here, just before SVA first and revsers were very close and I did have a few problems but then they went away. So I have been through and searched for these problems and tried all the solutuions that I could find. The most promising was putting the three washers under the gear leaver. That fixed reverse but 1st and 2nd are very stiff and I can't always select them..... Any ideas.... Someone also mentioned about a plastic insert ? I dont have one of these does, anyone have a pic of one ? Not sure if that's the problem ? Quote
pete g Posted April 17, 2005 Posted April 17, 2005 what small collar on your gearbox have you removed the reverse indent. because it is not used with the extension the anti rattle shim should be removed from gearbox linkage and fitted in extension. and use washers to fine tune linkage Quote
Black Shadow Posted April 18, 2005 Author Posted April 18, 2005 Pete, thanks for that. Do you or anyone else have any pics of the parts you refer to as I could not see what what your talking about... Quote
pete g Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 sorry no pics and camera is broken the ident is a piece of metel about 25 mm long by about 15mmx10mm it sits in end of gearbox housing, its what locates the gearlever when you put it in reverse[ ie stop you selecting reverse by mistake, when you push gearlever down to select reverse it slides against this] this should be already welded in your extension linkage, therefore not required in gearbox housing and should be drifted out and removed[with big hammer and punch] the anti rattle shim, normally sits in gearbox tail shaft where lever fits.this is removed and fitted in the westfield extension,[same place as gearbox had it fitted] there may be pictures in westfield manual hope this is clearer[as mud] Quote
Tony sei Posted April 18, 2005 Posted April 18, 2005 Hello Gents, My problem seems to be the opposite to "Black Shadows"... [Type 9 with westfield extension (I believe..)] All to easy to get reverse instead of first, some one mentioned "", the extension I assume? The build manual does not seem to show the extension in any details. Any Pics or advice much appreciated. Regards Tony Sei Quote
Chris_G Posted April 19, 2005 Posted April 19, 2005 Guy's I've had similar problems in the past with mine. I found that the profile of the reverse 'notch' had worn on mine and eventually allowed me to too easily select reverse. I built the notch up with my welder until it was more like that shown by the hatched area. This solved that problem. I have also had the stiff 1st and 2nd problem but found this to simply be a case of getting things in the right position before doing all the bolts up. For black shadow I would suggest putting the gearbox in 1st, slackenning off the three bolts that hold the gearstick to the extension, giving it a bit of a wiggle and then tightenning it up again. This worked for me. The plastic part is an anti-rattle device and just makes things quiter but I dont think it will solve either of your problems here. Some kind sole from this forum sent me one of these FOC when I was in need! Quote
Tony sei Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Thanks for the reply and piccy's. (sorry for hijacking the thread! Will hopefully have a look underneath at the week end. Cheers Tony Sei Quote
Black Shadow Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 All sorted, now have a nice smooth gear selection for all gears... Turned out to be the reverse select thing, drifted that out, three washers under the gear stick leaver it's self, job done... Just need my number plates now and can do some legal blatting. Quote
Hammy Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 I seem to have a related problem to this - I'm not using any extension, but have a problem finding finding 1st/2nd and the lever esily drops into reverse. I suspect I don't have he indent plate in the gearbox, the gearbox is a an ex westfield car type 9 box ( but I've put the carpets back now!) . Is there a way of putting the indent plate back again and does anyone have a picture of it and how it fits. Quote
markcoopers Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Hi Paul, I don't have any pics, but if you look down into where the gear remote selector fitts, stood at the prop end and facing towards the engine, the Revers indent is on the right hand side. It will be about1-1.5 inches long, about 5mm high and slides intoa slot in the tail case. I would be sursrised if you could get one seperately.........however i have a collection of gearboxes in the garage that i'm sure will offer up one if you are really stuck. regards, mark Quote
Hammy Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Thx for that Mark, starting to look "do able" Is the plate something I could make up - i.e. is it just a flat piece of 1/8 steel or whatever ? I have some grainy pics in a repair manual, I can see it , but it is not very clear. Also does the plate slot in from the rear or from the top and how is it held in place ? * edit* I'll Put a wanted ad in and see if anyone has such a plate they have removed to fit a remote gear shift -now sorted.
