V7 SLR Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 I've got both now. When we moved in it was obvious that the house needed gutting. Before I laid a nice "never to be lifted again" floor, I decided to rip up the floorboards and lay mains, telephone, TV and network cables everywhere. As the house is dry lined, it means I only needed to poke cables up/down the walls without chasing bit sections of wall out. Although the wired network is only used in a couple of places now, I've got the ability to plug in all sorts of stuff. Boxes that turn composite video into Ethernet for transmission through your wifi system are about to be released. You will be able to watch TV on your wireless iPaw soon. You don't want these transmission boxes to have their own wifi sender if you've already got one in the house. I also hanker after an Ethernet webcam so I can watch V7 while I'm at work. S'all about gadgets in the end. Quote
Mike H Posted November 21, 2003 Posted November 21, 2003 d-link dsl-300g adsl modem generation II switch is a SCAn nway 8 port 10/100 fast ethernet switch It seems to be working again now! So what have you given your PCs as IP addresses, gateway IP and DNS server IP in order for this setup to work? AFAIK - you must have a router modem (perhaps with DHCP) or each of your PCs will need a public IP address. Unlikely that you have a range of 'real' addresses for a home account. Do each of your PCs have firewall software installed or just XP firewall on the network connection? In a small network I would prefer the single PC connected to the modem and ICS as it simplifies security but obviously has the downside that this PC always needs to be switched on. BTW - I still have to unwind a 30ft extension lead from upstairs and plug it in the lounge so you may not want to trust a word I say. cheers Mike Quote
JonnyBoy Posted November 21, 2003 Author Posted November 21, 2003 So what have you given your PCs as IP addresses, gateway IP and DNS server IP in order for this setup to work? Absolutely FA. its set to auto detect AFAIK - you must have a router modem (perhaps with DHCP) or each of your PCs will need a public IP address. Unlikely that you have a range of 'real' addresses for a home account. Not sure. alothough back in the uk, zen provided me with 5 ip's for their home package! I found that a few holes in walls/ceilings helps matters Quote
