windy Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Just been to tax my westy. It appears the post office are now linked up to the DVLA / insurance / MOT database so don't need you to complete any forms anymore. Anyone else been to the post office recently & not needed to complete paperwork? Quote
Muttley Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 Was this a main Post Office? My local one still needed all the paperwork the other day for the tin top. Muttley. Quote
Frau Vesty Posted March 31, 2005 Posted March 31, 2005 I think it only applies if you have a new style printed MOT certificate and not a handwritten one You can certainly do it online with those criteria as well, and they will post your new tax disc to you Tax or SORN your vehicle online here Quote
windy Posted March 31, 2005 Author Posted March 31, 2005 Was this a main Post Office? Yep, but any post office that issues bar coded discs must have the equipment in place to issue them. They are scanned & entered into the database at time of issue. I was also told that there are now lots of camera's in the UK that can read these bar codes & the vehicle registration to confirm the car has valid MOT, Insurance & tax. If things don't tally up they can then issue automatic fines / notify police of offenders & prosecute. They can also use this technology to track anyone throughout the UK. Big Brother is watching! S8ight Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 last time ive taxed the three cars havent needed to fill any forms in, about 6-8 months ago Quote
studbuckle Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Local PO, scanned Barcode on V5, checked hand written MOT and Insurance docs, then issued new tax disc (scanning the disc). No paperwork and this was a re-tax after SORN. Nice to see technology that works Quote

If things don't tally up they can then issue automatic fines / notify police of offenders & prosecute. They can't scan mine cuz it's hanging on the side of my roll bar! The camera vans you see on the road detecting cars without valid tax discs read the number plate, cross reference it with the database, and stop anyone not showing as taxed. Nothing to do with bar codes. Quote
Poz Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Im going to get mine taxed at lunch following SORN - ill let you know how I get on. Quote
Poz Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Job done! Scanned V5, no form to fill in! V. quick and easy! On the road! Quote

Sorry, I just like that kind of thing Quote
Peter Cox Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 ...tell that to the GPO in Telford. I had my new V5, he was adamant I needed my MOT and insurance. Unfortunately, I had them both. Double drat, the insurance was a schedule, not a certificate Back to them on Monday, I'll take the certificate anyway. I still wonder whether this story has anything to do with today's date though (that and a bit of conspiracy ) Quote
