CrashBangWallop Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 The water pump on the CVH I took out of the car had two exits... the extra one going to my heater and header tank. The RS turbo one does not have this extra outlet. I'll probably remove the heater so, do I need the rail running along the inside of the chassis? I'm supposing the return to the header tank is via the oil/water exchange unit that lies between the block and the filter. Maybe, an unusual question because I don't know of any RST Westfields doing the rounds but, someone may know the engine. Thanks, Neil Quote
scruffythefirst Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 Go ask on passionford.com However, the turbo usualy has a return to the header tank as its used water usualy tends to be full of air.... Quote
CrashBangWallop Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 Good morning, Hugh. I was told the turbo doesn't have to be water-cooled because of the various gubbins attached (360 degree thrust-bearing is one). May leave it out, depending on where the other pipes have to go first. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 I was told the turbo doesn't have to be water-cooled because of the various gubbins attached (360 degree thrust-bearing is one) Tis true, the garret plain bearing turbos can be run without water because they use a high flow of oil for lubrication this keeps them cool, however if you don't let them cool down properly before switching the engine off you will kill the turbo instantly - if you get stuck in a gravel trap and stall or any other simmilar senario where you cant let it idle for 5 minutes after ragging it senseless. For the extra peace of mind I'd run with the water cooling if I were you. The 360 deg thrust bearing won't affect the ability to run without water - It will let you run antilag and without a dump valve easily. Mind you standard turbos can run without a dump valve, mostly. chazpowerslide Posted March 29, 2005 Posted March 29, 2005 But Neil NEEDS a dump valve. The Puff Tishhhhhh of the dump valve is the only reason he's going through all this. Chaz. Quote

CrashBangWallop Posted March 29, 2005 Author Posted March 29, 2005 Alright. I let the first comment go because it's Chaz's birthday but, now I feel I should quell this rumour before it gets out of hand. The reason of getting a turbo is the kick up the A*** when it cuts in. Hence, the reason for a bigger turbo than the standard T2. The noise it makes is, an added advantage and, yes, I think it sounds great but, not... I repeat NOT... the driving force for the engine change which, ultimately, was for me to learn a bit about cars. Thank you, Neil p.s And it's 'whoosh', not 'vroom' Quote
Blatman Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 The reason of getting a turbo is the kick up the A*** when it cuts in. I hope you're fitting sticky tyres then, otherwise your expected kick in the back will simply be wheelspin... Quote

I hope you're fitting sticky tyres then, otherwise your expected kick in the back will simply be wheelspin... Two things I was told to get... Tyres were a definite although, it may be more 'fun' on my current tyres The car is becoming less and less an everyday car so, that's not a problem. The other was a full RAC roll-bar. I'm sitting at work now contemplating a call to Westfield to order one. Do they only do it in black? I'd like a different colour Neil Quote
Blatman Posted March 30, 2005 Posted March 30, 2005 Ask for one bare. I'm sure they'd supply one. Then it's off to your local powdercoaters for a look at the colour swatches... Quote

I've nearly finished my engine bay mock up so it'll be off to the powdercoaters soon, any suggestions for a colour scheme - I have a blue block and sump with charcoal bodywork, everything else is yet to be coloured Quote
