Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 A thread over on Pistonheads made me think of this. Someone out there must be old enough to answer this: what was the label that Woolworths sold their cover versions of top 20 records under in the fifties and sixties? And, were they EVER any good? I, of course was told about them by my old mum! Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted November 14, 2003 Author Posted November 14, 2003 Nick M, Nah! Much earlier than K-Tel. Woolies used to have a full top 20 of 45s but they were ALL cover versions by unknown (deservedly) "artists". This is the fifties and sixties! Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 FW Woolworth used to sell a range of records labelled as MFP = Music For Pleasure Dodgy cover versions sung by session singers usually bad These were sold right up to the 70's Now where did I leave my zimmer Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted November 14, 2003 Author Posted November 14, 2003 Mark, You're right but they were LPs and cost about £1 each - I've still got some! They're going mouldy, though. Perhaps they were made out of scrap Trabant bodies? The 45s were called something like "Winfield" but that wasn't quite it. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted November 14, 2003 Author Posted November 14, 2003 Ask Jeeves failed but Google came up trumps! It was "Embassy" and the proof, if proof be needed, is here Now I can go back to sleep! Thanks, chaps, you've revealed your ages! Quote
chazpowerslide Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Not a thread about old Webbers then? Chaz. Quote
MikeB Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Strangely there is.Janie Webber runs K-tel these days. I used to work there as I am in that business. As far as I know K-tel has done nothing for Woolworths since the beginning of the time when budget music was still popular. They did some stuff for Crimson and these days are not really doing anything much with anybody as far as I know. Quote
neilwillis Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 Got any old buttoneers in the garage then? Just think of the handy applications you could use a buttoneer to in a kitcar Quote
jeff oakley Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 Ah nostalga, The best records from my youth in the seventies was the Top Of The pops series, which like the Woolworth ones was cover versions of the current hits using sessions singers. One of them at the time was Reg ? alias Elton John. Genrally they were rubbish but, the cover girls were fantastic for all us young men. Getting caught with Health and efficency was bad but the full collection of these was better and in colour and legal, and the youth of today will never belive that we had to get up at three in the morning and ......... jeff oakley Posted November 15, 2003 Posted November 15, 2003 Having just read Niels post I remember the buttoner, in Fact I can probably remember the whole K tel range as my mum I would bet still has them. I could never understand that Chemists the world over strived to produce the best plastics and industrialists perfected the production process, and the zenith was the Chop-o-matic. We had every concevable fruit and veg chopped in it for no other reason so I could then spend the next hour cleaning it. We never had it so good. Quote
MikeB Posted November 17, 2003 Posted November 17, 2003 There is of course absolutely no truth whatsoever in the rumour that k-tel used to knock off other manufacturers products with inferior copies that never worked properly. It is also a malicious lie that the company was delisted from the Nasdaq after someone was naughty artificially hiking share value. See Here Quote
