Joff Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 the only reason i wanted to refit it is because the spoke have a black finish on them and i thought if the chain did fal off it would make a mess of the finish ? Nick Whilst up riding the Trossachs we stayed at a hostel and were chatting to one of the topdogs of shimano in Scotland, who informed us that the protector are put on by manufacturers because of the american public! and compensation culture we live in. If when changing down gears and you change down too many too fast your chain can jump off and lodge between the gears and the wheel, causing the wheel to jam and you fall off. This caused alot of americans to sue the bike manufacturers for not putting in place suitable safe guards for it to be prevented!. The knock on effect is that all bikes manufactured must have them in place. Depending on what type of riding you are doing, Downhill, Cross country, Freeride, Trials - your spokes could endup being scratched/ damaged anyway. Black spokes do look good, but a bike is for riding not for posing so dont be such a big girls blouse and get out and ride. Quote
smithydar Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 i thought cassettes were replaced by cd's years ago... darren Quote
JasonR Posted March 28, 2005 Posted March 28, 2005 I recently converted my old bike to single speed. It took a bit of experimenting but it runs fine without a tensioner in a 32:18 (or 32:18) ratio. From what I have seen 'most' bikes with vertical dropouts can run one gear without a tensioner. Oddly when I am out on the single speed bike it doesn't seem to slow my down to much. I would post a picture but my single speed bike is put to shame by Neil's Quote
