rich101 Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 Hi all, What sort of power can the standard ford sierra diff (from the 2lt) handle before it'll explode?!? I was going to be fitting a cosworth 7.5" lsd over xmas, but after quickly trying this I found that there wasn't really enough space for the inner cv joint/end to clear the chassis bar on one side. Is it possible to buy some after market shafts with 'lower profile' joints to get around this or will I need to stick to a 7" diff but beefed up and with an LSD? Ta!! Quote
Blatman Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 There are plenty of 230/240/250bhp cars in the speed series using Sierra diffs, and and several turbo nutter BEC's with more BHP, although I suspect that the diffs are a little less stressed due to the lighter weight. There are also a few Cossie trubo cars which have been known to run at 330bhp, and IIRC, Scooby has something around the 300bhp mark. It's worth noting that if you have a reasonably new chassis, the 7.5" Cossie diff will fit in if you leave the diff spacer off... Quote
Mark B Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 If it's any help, the 7.5 inch cosworth diff with lsd is good for upto about 385bhp and roughly 360Ft Lbs of torque, after that the gears break (I know this from experience). The standard sierra diff isn't that much different, I'd have thought it'd take 300-350bhp no probs. HTH, Mark. Quote
rich101 Posted March 17, 2005 Author Posted March 17, 2005 My cars a '96 registered seiw, which doesn't have the spacer Ok so the diff will be upto the job, how about the driveshafts?!? I'm running (or will when I get it outside! a cossie turbo, in the region 250-300bhp Are the xr4 (are these the ones that have an lsd??) diffs a straight swap, and have the bolt on driveshafts? Quote
Mark B Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 xr4x4 diff has an lsd & is 7 inch, so you should be ok with that, if you're running a YB turbo I would definitely go for a diff with an lsd in it. Good luck with the conversion! Cheers, Mark. Quote
rich101 Posted March 17, 2005 Author Posted March 17, 2005 Thanks Mark, Are the diffs from Granada Cosworths 7" or 7.5"? I've spied one going on ebay at the moment...... Rich Quote
Mark B Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 Not too sure to be honest, not had much to do with granny cosworths, only sierras and escorts. I would've thought it could be either really as they share many parts from the other sierras (eg brakes etc), my gut feeling is that it'd be a 7.5 inch version but best to e-mail the seller really to make sure. Cheers, Mark. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 I'm pretty sure granny diffs are 7.5's. Xr4x4 should be fine in such a light car - theyre good to 350ish without 7,000rpm launches. I think some of the early cossie diffs were 7 inches too - it may be the 4x4 cossies actually. Quote
rich101 Posted March 17, 2005 Author Posted March 17, 2005 Cheers for the suggestions/info. Scruffy - how's your build coming along?? do you still need the info on the wires, cos I can take some pictures for you over easter if you need em still? Quote

Slowly - too much work and pending skiing holiday with 3000 female students is gettting in the way. I've pretty much finished the ECU side of the electrics now though. Once i had a look it was all quite clear, cheers anyway though. You wouldnt happen to have one of the bolts that screws into the head that the cambelt cover locates on? Quote
rich101 Posted March 18, 2005 Author Posted March 18, 2005 3000 female students eh??!! I can see how they'd take some getting through!!! Yeah the wiring is fairly straight forward once you get it all laid out, just looks a little daunting when it's in a big heap on the floor. Fraid my engine came without the cambelt cover, and without the screws... Quote

My engine also came without the cambelt cover and screws, but I now have a cambelt cover Quote
