worldwidewebs Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 I'm picking up my new Westy on Saturday and need to arrange insurance. The quotes I'm getting are all quite reasonable, but when I mention track days the price goes through the roof. How important is it to have trackday insurance and what is considered a reasonable excess? Cheers Andy Quote
Nick M Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 I'd always keep road and track insewerance separate to be honest. You can organise track cover as and when you need it from places like Competition Car Insurance - I rarely insure my car to be honest - and it won't impact your road policy if, heaven forbid, you do get it wrong on a trackday. Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Its very important to have trackday insurance if you have a big crash And if you dont........... You pays your money and you takes your choice I never bother, the most its ever cost me is a new nosecone And that cost less than the premiums to insure my car on the track Quote
felters Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Never bothered... I guess you might total it but I reckon it costs around £500 per corner if you whack the suspension hard in a barrier. And that's probably the worst that will happen. I worry more about bits falling off or going bang. On the other hand my car is probably way older and worth much less than yours... Quote
worldwidewebs Posted November 5, 2003 Author Posted November 5, 2003 The car's worth about 7500 and most insurance excesses seem to be about 2000. That's a lot of damage! But what happens if you drive into someone else? Who pays out then and who determines who was at fault, or is it just "unlucky"? Quote
furtive Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 On a trackday, your insurance doesn't cover 3rd parties. So if you hit someone else, they have to pay for the damage or come round late and night and beat the cost out of you Quote
Chris.B Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 My policy with SureTerm covers Track days. I switched from Adrian Flux because of this. Quote
conibear Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Could you publish the tel. no. of Sureterm? Cheers Ian Quote

worldwidewebs Posted November 5, 2003 Author Posted November 5, 2003 I phoned Sureterm yesterday and they said they never do policies that cover trackdays! Quote
Guest Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Seems to me the biggest risk is spinning in front of someone who cannot avoid you. Best 'policy' is to pick track days that do not put too many cars on track at the same time and avoid those with lots of tin top loonies. Nothing like a roof to give you a sense of security. Other plastic loonies should be more agile and with a better chance of missing you anyway. John Quote
Bazzer Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 On a trackday, your insurance doesn't cover 3rd parties. So if you hit someone else, they have to pay for the damage or come round late and night and beat the cost out of you If the accident was your fault and you injured someone else or damaged there property. They could sue you the same as on the road. The only way round this I can see is if you could prove that they new about the risk before hand and still went ahead. I had a passenger when I had an accident at Castle Coombe a good few years back. He was injured and Norwich Union paid a personal injury claim to him. Hence I don't often have a passenger seat in the MegaBusa Cheers Bazzer Quote
adhawkins Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 I phoned Sureterm yesterday and they said they never do policies that cover trackdays! Slight variation, but just got off the phone with SureTerm, and they said their track day cover only covers you when you have a 'qualified instructor' in the car with you... Sounds like those who think they're covered for track days with SureTerm should give them a ring to check! Andy Quote
Chris.B Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 I phoned Sureterm yesterday and they said they never do policies that cover trackdays! I have IAM & RoSPA quals - my policy is explicitly written for me & does cover TrackDays. I guess individual circumstances apply in this area. Quote
