clive powell Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 very good in 1970, pre cross flow crank, chains & oil leaks, good undated parts very expensive. Quote
never fear Posted March 2, 2005 Author Posted March 2, 2005 yep saw that one aswell, dont like cvh lumps tho. called rattle snake engines rounds here. for obvious reasons. went and saw the silver one in london last nite. think i'll have that one. 1600 x flow just gotta get rid of dodgy canoe wings. thats a point, anyone want two canoe's that i'll have for sale?. lotus twin cam one on findit.co.uk looked ok but if engine bits are exspensive then no good. Eccentric_Rich Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 Great for an Elan, Lotus Cortina or Twin Cam Escort but I would never put one in my Westfield. Great engine in the sixties and early seventies but an antique now. Richard. Quote
Keith Scarfe Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Best in one of these: Complete with original +ve earth dc generator (dyanamo): Quote
scott beeland Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Had one in my 1st westfield. Sprint spec so about 126 bhp. Very nice noise; and quick enough at the time.....But didn't half chuck oil out. Expensive bits to get big power out of them I believe. Quote
algie Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I know that car with the twin cam engine. My son and I owned it before we bought the ZEI220. We sold it approx two years ago and it was a super little car, we fitted new seats , new hood and side screens removeable momo and harnesses. In two years of ownership it never ever let us down, the build quality was fantastic and it came with a full history. If you want a good car I would not hesitate to buy it. We only sold because we saw a cossy advertised ( that got a pasting on here also) Email me offline if you require any more information Algie Quote
carlw Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Cracking engine, superb noise and in the last 3000 miles no problems at all, used daily and Not pampered like some.I asked for the same advice a few months ago and most people(Not All!!! seemed a little "blinkered" towards the more classic end of Westfield.Zetecs/VX's/Bike Engines seem to be the in thing. If you get a good Lotus Engine you will be pleased, mines about 150 bhp and taken out to 1700cc,performance more than adequate for a quick road car. baz Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I am running a standard Twincam at the moment and although I am planning to go to a 4AGE, I can't knock the Lotus. But I do agree about the oil leaks, still it's a mixed blessing as I use it everyday and a liberal coating of 20/50 keeps the chassis free of road salt! As to cost's, I rebuilt the head in the summer, with new valve guides, unleaded seats and a top end gasket set for about £275, which I don't think is excessive. Anyone wan't to buy it? Quote
never fear Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 we call em that course they rattle, hydrolic followers or something. sound crap anyhow. my xr3i years ago was the same as was my mk 4 escort cab. Quote
perksy Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 we call em that course they rattle, hydrolic followers or something. sound crap anyhow. my xr3i years ago was the same as was my mk 4 escort cab. Caused by the Wrong oil being used or Infrequent oil changes, can be cured usually by adding some flushing oil and then carrying out an oil and filter change. Nowt Wrong with the Ford CVH, it's proven Engineering and can be tuned to provide reliable Horsepower, I wouldn't Rule it out if the rest of the car is a Good spec' Quote
markcoopers Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Zetec and VX also have hydloic lifters. My old CVH never rattled, old ones with worn cams can, but they should'nt if in good order. To be honest a well built CVH is not a bad choice. It will be as powerfull as a similar spec cross flow, cheap to run, easy to service and shouldn't have any oil leaks. 130bhp is 130bhp, what ever churns it out. Think of it as a half way house between a X-flow and a Zetec, and it makes a bit more sence. Indeed, take the view they are less sort, and haggle real hard to get a real bargin. Don't know the Yellow car linked above, but cosmeticly it looks fine, and engines can always be swapped. Monkeyleggend also has a very good CVH car for sale at the moment, well built and tuned, giving a reliable 136Bhp with lots of lowdown tourque. One final point to consider, if CVH cars are cheaper as they are considered less desirable, then your money will go further. I would always recomend buying as new as possible, for reliability, part fit etc. Good hunting, Mark Quote
