SteveRST Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 hehe - My Westy gets a tough life.. Only car so used everyday (snow today! ), no garage and no hose at front of house to wash her, so it generally gets a clean with fresh water every week or so. I view my Westy as a fun car that is there to be used. Sometimes abused. Mines an old one (1990) but in VGC, but its not an expensive car (5k). I am quite prepared to work on it to keep it in good condition, but I don't believe in pampering it. I cleaned up/re-painted the rear chassis & wishbones last summer and will do the front end this summer. But then I enjoy doing that kinda thing. Should keep it all tidy and protected for the next few years. steve Quote
gadrego Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Mr Stare, Did you paint everything in situ or remove parts to paint them? If in situ, did you just use a brush and Hammerite or something else? My anti rollbar and track rod ends are looking a little brown at the moment. Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 How do you do that? jack it up? Mines too close to the ground to get at all that! I'll bet there's nothing in it, ride height wise. I have about 75mm under my shortened Vx sump, and a rear diffuser to deal with. Still only takes about 10 minutes with a non aerosol can of WD and a rag. I can comfortably get enough of my arms into the underbody area to accomplish the task easily. You just have to resign yourself to the fact that you *have* to lie on the ground, whether it's wet or not... Quote
predawson Posted February 22, 2005 Author Posted February 22, 2005 Does anyone use Waxoil? I did the whole chassis before fitting everything and intend to do everywhere accessible every 6 months. Will that be sufficient to drive in all conditions without needing to use WD40 or not? Quote
JonnyBoy Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Tin tops have 6 or 10 year corrosion warranties... mostly... isnt that perforation warranties.. very different to corrosion warranty me thinks ! Quote
judder Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Took the car out on Sunday over gritted roads - got hit in the face when the gritter past me, drove though a puddle of ice - which led to a salty wave over me and the car(ooo missus ! ). Had to wash it as soon as I got home as all the black trim went white. Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 For the painted parts, yes. There must be some sort of warranty for the important stuff like the chassis and suspension though, surely, although it's been a while since I had a look at a new car warranty... Quote
oldman Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I like a drop of salt on mine ...makes it taste better Quote
pistonbroke Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 I'm completely with Buzz on this one Dont forget your tin top is treated with metal primers , paints , underseal, splash shields ,etc. to keep the harmful effects of road salt away from the base metal . Yer average Westy chassis is covered in loverly aluminium panels , all those nice engine bits are open to road spray . Just imagine it, sitting there, covered in salt waiting for a bit of moisture to mix it into a nice dialectric paste and it all starts to penetrate the nicks and crannies in the chassis . Damage may not be obvious immediatley, but long term ? No salty roads for me keep em off Quote

It has to be seen to be beleived. IMHO no kitcar is given the standard protection of a modern day tintop, and as such should not be subjected to such conditions without extra tlc. I'm not saying don't use the car in winter, infact its often the only time to find a favourite road in a reasonably empty state, but don't try to delude yourself that because its made of f/glass/ally its invinsible, because its not, nothing could be further from the truth.
