predawson Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Rain doesn't keep the Westie in the garage but salted roads certainly does. Anyone drive when the roads are gritted? Quote
Mark B Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 No chance, not in the westy anyway. once it gets into everything it makes a right mess & starts corroding everything in no time......... Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Yep was out in it on Sunday just rinsed it off and a good coat of WD40 Quote
a4gom Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Yep was out in it on Sunday just rinsed it off and a good coat of WD40 I was out in mine and I've just parked it straight in the garage The roads were bone dry? Now I'm thinking? Should I get it back out and wash it off? Where do you spray the WD40? Quote
neilwillis Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Since when did a little weather wreck a Westfield? Come and take a look at mine if you're worried. It goes out in ANY weather, has been on the road for 2 years, and apart from the paint needing refreshing on the track rods every once in a while, there is absolutely no corrosion anywhere. A powder coated chassis, and care taken with the build will mean they're very durable. Washing them down with fresh water, and a little wd40 is all the attention they need. Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Where do you spray the WD40? Everywhere... Take time to get it in to all the nooks and cranny's, and you'll easily deal with the worst of the salt. I spray the wishbones, rose joints, ball joints, rack, column, sump (it's ally...) exhaust (even though it's cam coated), driveshafts and everything at the rear end, including all the electrics, and basically everywhere there's a gap... The roads were bone dry? Is your garage? Are you *sure* that there is no chance for condensation to form as the car cools down? That's what'll start corrosion, even if the roads were dry. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Seems an odd topic to start Most folks will drive their tin-top without a second thought about gritted roads and yet show utmost concern when it comes to their fibreglass and ali Westfield - which is often worth less than the everyday wagon And yes I drive my tin-top everyday Quote
Blatman Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Tin tops have 6 or 10 year corrosion warranties... mostly... Quote
neilwillis Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Blatters is quite right, but if they rusted, they wouldn't be covered by corrosion warranties! Nothing better than giving a warranty on something that doesn't happen - it's called business sense lol. I intend to strip my car down every few years, to nip any problems in the bud, but so far, even though it is out in the filthiest weather Britain has to throw at it, it certainly doesn't suffer any ill effects. I do feel that some people tend to treat Westfields as their pride and joy (and why not?), and wrap them in cotton wool, but they're no worse than any other car as far as corrosion problems are concerned - IMHO of course. Major Stare Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 My car was built in 1989 and ive owned it for just over a year now. Its in excellent condition and its been in all weather conditions with no signs of problems. Last week i put the car on axle stands and removed the wheels, today i painted all the arms, steering rack, drive shafts etc. Should be good for another 15yrs Quote
neilwillis Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Are you a fresh or salt water fish though? Quote
Major Stare Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 PMSL Salt water, i dont use deodorant or aftershave, i use WD40 Quote
a4gom Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 Everywhere... How do you do that? jack it up? Mines too close to the ground to get at all that! How longs it take? I think by the sounds of this I might have to invest in a 5 gallon drum of wd40 and a plant sprayer with long spray arm. Is your garage? Thats a good point! and the answer is NO. When it rains I have about 20ltr/hr running through my garage!! It was summer and dry when I bought the house I put 4"x2" timber all round the edge and threw in 3/4m3 of conc in the middle to make the water run around the edge and out under the door!! In the past I have always wd40 to loosen stuff and clean stuff and used duck oil to lubricate and protect. I find wd40 tends to evaporate? Any thoughts on that?? Quote
