Hold F5 (or is it F8) as soon as it gets beyond booting BIOS (i.e. the first bit you see on the screen when you switch it on). You should be presented with a menu offering you Safe Mode.

P.S. when I tried doing the hold down shift key while booting up, it came up with a sticky key message

Release the shift key, press any key to continue, and then immediately press and hold the shift key again..........

you could also of tried typing "msconfig" on the run facility in the start menu, this then brings up a list of programs that start when comp is turned on. There is an option to only start programs that are needed for comp to boot up.
