Got a pic of a bare IRS chassis?

Been some talk of improving the Caterham de Dion, i.e. making it both lighter and stronger. Whilst this is always an option I'm curious what it takes to engineer an IRS into a Se7en shaped car.

Anyone got a few pics of theirs during the build? :t-up:

I'm sure you'll find plenty of pics showing diff installation etc on Steppenwolf's site here but I think these are the one's you want this and this  ;)

Steve looks like you put the rear top wish bone bolts in the wrong way round ie. you have to remove the fuel tank to remove them unless you have swapped them round already.

'Tis true ... However, it is right if you follow the Westfield build manual ( which I did! :arse: ) but wrong if you think ahead ( which I didn't! )

Mind you, if I ever have the need to remove the rear wishbones, removing the fuel tank first will probably be the last of my concerns   :0

Edited to remove glaring typo .....

Cheers. The 3rd pic is the one most interesting. Pity it's all too large to re-engineer into a Caterham chassis.

Thanks.

Yes but make sure you use half height nylocs and cut down the bolts, if you put them in the other way.

The reason Westfield sugest putting them in that way is because they can hole the tank if you don't

Quite a few people have had this happen :(

There is 5mm gap between the bolt and tank so far so good.

nig - the latest westfield set up may be, but the original IRS set-up isnt (least I dont think so).   It is considerably smaller than the one shown by stepponwolf.  it used the mk 2 westfield diff in a westfield casing.  i dont have any photos but somebody else may have?

there are some problems with this set-up, but i believe they can all be engineered out ???

The person that built mine had the forethought to put them the other way round, but not the forethought to chop it down  :sheep:  :durr:

It took 5 years but it made a hole :arse:  :arse:

I can thoroughly recommend that tank repair gum :t-up: 2 years later it is still fine. :D

I holed my tank when I crashed because of the roll-bar mounting bolt going through the side of the tank.

I'm still trying to think of a suitable material to prevent this happening again (appart from a better driver! ) :p

but the original IRS set-up isnt

Although the original set-up used a custom diff casing, to hold a MKII Escort (English) diff, did the narrow bodied cars also use the Sierra diff housing?  If so, this might be more what V7 is looking for.

b.t.w. do your friends on The Dark Side know what heresy you are planning?        :D

Yes we do  :p

We are monitoring the situation
