CrashBangWallop Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Good evening people, Before my engine goes into my car I was conisdering getting the flywheel on my 80k mile engine flattened/smoothed/levelled (whatever the correct term is)? I bought a new clutch kit for it. Could anyone give me an idea of how much, please? Was also wondering if it was worth getting my flywheel lightened and balanced, considering that this is only used as a road car. Again, approximate cost would be nice Thanks, Neil Quote
cidersurfer Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Neil What engine? I paid £100 to get my Vx one bead blasted, CNC milled for lightening and balanced. Chris Quote

cidersurfer Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Ah, bit different then. But I guess, the principle would be the same. I was also (by the same engine builder) given the choice of £70 for turning it on a lathe. It would have been slightly heavier as the CNC work allowed him to remove material the lathe wouldn't. Quote

CrashBangWallop Posted February 20, 2005 Author Posted February 20, 2005 Ah, bit different then I couldn't afford a cosworth ! Did it take long to do? Would it make that much difference to me? I don't take the car on tracks, sprints or hill-climbs. Mainly round the countryside once a month and city-driving (If you can call Cambridge a city... more like a large village ) Sorry about all the questions. Neil Quote
scruffythefirst Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 I couldn't afford a cosworth ! Can anyone? Burtons skimmed mine but I didn't have it lightened. My reasoning was that a heavey flywheel would help smooth out the torque surge as the turbo kicks in. And I couldnt afford a nice steel light one. Quite expensive having it balanced and skimmed tho - burtons did it and it cost £60, plus £35 to balance it Quote
CrashBangWallop Posted February 20, 2005 Author Posted February 20, 2005 Hugh, Did you post it to Burton's or just drive there? They're in Essex aren't they? I haven't taken the old clutch off yet so, the flywheel might be fine underneath. Neil Quote
markl Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Neil, Yes Essex, https://www.burtonpower.com/default.aspx much cheaper to remove it and drop it in, Mark Quote

Theyre a good lot, expensive but good. I went there after I got dubious service from a guy local to me and a place in burwell. Quote
Blatman Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 And I couldnt afford a nice steel light one. My nice steel light one cost less than what you paid to have yours balanced and skimmed... Quote

Well If I had known that Anyway, I'm sticking to this... My reasoning was that a heavey flywheel would help smooth out the torque surge as the turbo kicks in. Quote
Blatman Posted February 21, 2005 Posted February 21, 2005 Fair comment. However, I have posted replies in the past about the light flywheels. Here's one you seem to have forgotten about... Earlier posting on the same subject is here. May '04, so no excuse for me not letting you know... Quote
