Guest Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Had a business appointment with an ex Ford main dealer last week - nice old guy, now winding down for retirement. At the back of the workshop - under covers and on axle stands is a mint condition Capri 280. E plate (1989) with a genuine 18k on the clock. The car is spotless inside and out. I used to own a 2.8 S (like the one in Minder) but sold it to buy my fantastic wife an engagement ring and pay the deposit for our first house - happy days. I would need this to become my weekend roadcar - and would sell the Rover to buy it (so some good would come out of the deal! Full (ish) spec is; Green metallic and 5 spoke alloys. Cream leather interior, 5 speed box and an empty ashtray. Question; How much should I pay for such a beast - and should I really even be thinking about it? Quote
mud Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 pay as much as it takes because you only ever really regret the things you don't do.IMO Quote
Camel_Landy Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Go for it... The 280 is one of the few Fords that I actually like. M Quote
Mark Stanton Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 a classic perhaps a search of classic car mag or website would give some guidance on price Quote
windy Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Paul go for it. You'll need to sell the mrs ring and buy some gold bracelets and a chest wig for yourself The 280 has an LSD so you will need to find some wet roundabouts to get the most fun from it. I reckon a minter should set you back about 6k, but I suspect the Ford man will know it's true value of maybe 8-10k. Car is also a bit slow, the engines were't that pokey, so going from westy to Capri will be a bit of a disapointment I think. You could always get yourself an Escort for similar money & go a bit faster! Quote
Rob Navin Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Yup. Buy it Don't worry about costs Don't buy an Escort, far too common Quote
scruffythefirst Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Did ford build a good car Thats a point for debate methinks, however they fitted a good engine once in a while. Well once actually Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Get it! Remember seeing one at the NEC motorshow; desperately wanted one at the time. Unfortunately, still at school could only affoard my old Fiesta Supersport Quote
Blatman Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Get it. Always had a soft spot for Capri's, and always fancied a 280 or a Brooklands. Had two loveley "facelift" Mk1's in my youth, and I still hanker after a genuine RS3100 ... Quote
Mark B Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 Go for it if you've always wanted one, although you may be slightly disappointed when you drive it, if you've been driving modern cars for the past few years, they aren't what you'd call the best handling car in the world! Sounds like it's got a few bits on it that it shouldn't have too, it should have 15 inch 7 spoke wheels which are rare as rocking horse and shouldn't have cream leather, it was black leather as I remember. I'd bear this in mind when haggling! Best of luck, Mark. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted February 15, 2005 Posted February 15, 2005 I had two (company cars) 2.8 Injection Capris - one 1983 and one 1985. They both went to 70,000+ miles with little bother. The 280 was technically the same as the '85 one I had; including the LSD but plus some cosmetic add-ons. It may well appreciate if you do a mean deal. The LSD made a funny noise on tight corners; bit like distant barking dogs Quote
