gadrego Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 My old banger's MOT runs out in June and I not sure that it's either a) going to pass or b)worth making pass. So the g/f and I are thinking of possible replacments. Criteria is basically less than say £2k, doesn't matter how old although must be fairly reliablem, but most importantly, we both fancy something a little different. Insurance must be fairly cheap as it's going under my girlfriends name and she has no NCB to throw as it. Oh and it needs to able to take a canoe on its roof! Can somebody also tell me how classic insurance works? Is it cheap? So far my shortlist is: 106 Rallye (may not be too great on reliablitly front) MK1 Golf Gti (Do these qualify as classics now?) Saab 900, early type VW Corrado Porsche 924 or possibly early 944 (can you fit a roofrack?) I'm sure there are loads more. Should also mention that I live by the sea and cars rust quickly around my way so it needs to be reasonably solid. Quote
kik1.6se Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 The 106 rallye is a great car. Even with the Westfield i still enjoy driving the rallye. They are cheap to insure and when i'm being careful i can get 48mpg out of it. They were all galvanised as well so as long as the car hasn't been in any accidentsm, rust shouldn't be a problem. If you look at any rallye watch out for overheating problems. Oil leaks and tappet noise are also common. For more information see www.106rallye.com the 106 rallye owners club. Here's mine. And also try this link for some more pics. http://www.peugeot-gti.net/photopo....si=kirk Kirk Quote
stu999 Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 Can somebody also tell me how classic insurance works? Is it cheap? AFAIK, it is pretty much the same as kitcar insurance, in that to gain any *real* benefits, you will be tied to a limited milage policy. Some classic insurance polices will not accrue a no-claims bonus either, watch for that when shopping around... With all of the above car suggestions, it is worth asking about the insurance first. I would imagine that the prices will vary considerably, especially for someone without any no-claims... Quote
oioi Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 mk1 MR2 footman james will do a limited mileage policy for it not sure if you can get a luggage rack for it great fun, surprising amount of luggage space and really rewarding to drive. only comment most limited mileage policies you do not accumulate a no claims bonus Mike ps peter was really chuffed with his new aero screen and my seats are on order cheers for the test fitting Quote
gadrego Posted February 8, 2005 Author Posted February 8, 2005 Hmmm, tempted by the rallye. Always fancied one after driving a 1.6 a while ago. Nice looking car in the photo as well. Think I'd be after the 1.3. Not sure the girlfriend is too keen though. OiOi, think MR2 may be too impractical for us. Bit of a shame as I do like them. Now considering a Honda CRX though as the MR2 reminded me about them. Need to get some insurance quotes and start looking around. Saw Peter last night, he seems to be getting on ok with the aeroscreen, bought some mirrors from him too so a happy deal all round. Quote
S8ight Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 from your list it has to be the mk1 golf Quote

TheRealMcNei11 Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Or stretch your budget a little and buy my s2 rallye, it's for sale. I'll even throw in a roof rack for your boat;) Quote
dac3774 Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Think I would take a gamble and for this! big bad ben It'll run forever and is probably okay on insurance! Quote
JonnyBoy Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 kirk.. the rallye looks to be a minter.. was it you who 'lost' the arches? get em sorted? I've been looking for a solid 205 gti for a bit now with no real luck must get that silly idea out of my head that one exists Quote
zoso Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 I'm selling my scimitar. It's definatley different, and with a little work would be totally reliable. Insurance isn't too bad either. body is fiberglass and the chassis is waxoyled... ya never know... Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Try an early BMW 3 series touring - around H reg. If you find one in good nick it will cost around £1500 and you won't lose a penny on it for another couple of years if you look after it. They are one of the few "ageless" and "classless" cars. Quite a few of 'em on ebay like this one Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 £895 ono (discount for WSCC members! ) BBB Quote
gadrego Posted February 11, 2005 Author Posted February 11, 2005 Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to have to politley refuse the scimitar and 100nx, nice though I'm sure they are. I'm not looking to buy right now, just getting some ideas to start hunting in spring. Like the idea of the Bimmer though. May look into those if insurance is reasonable. Quote
