Hi there Chaps,

I wondered if any of you fellas had any idea where I could buy a 3.54 Escort MKII Differential?? I understand I'm going to need to fit one of these at Snetterton and other faster circuits to prevent me hitting the rev limiter. :durr:

If anyone has a good one for sale please let me know.... ???

Thanks for any help

What diff do you currently run plus engine rev limit and wheel/tyre size?

If it's a 3.9 and you have a 4spd box you should get a decent enough top speed to avoid the limiter at every circuit bar Snetterton. I've been playing with the Quaife calculator and most of the standard 4spd boxes with a 3.9 will give 124mph with a 7500 rev limit and 13" wheels running 185/60 tyres.

It may be that having  a 3.5 will stop you hitting the limiter at one circuit but you may find it compromises things at other places.

You could start looking in the local scrappers, race car preppers such as procomp cat or plays kool might have one lying around, otherwise try Quaife or some of the Locost boys might have one for sale.

I'm 90% sure its running a 3.7 diff at the moment, the guy I bought the car from warned me I would run up against the rev limiter on long straights.

The engine RPM is limited to 7200 with the Alpha Engine management (something which can't be changed), and I believe that this means I top out between 125 and 130. I'm running a standard 1.8 Zetec linked to a TranX 4 speed box.

Thanks for the info Custardtart, I will keep looking - don't have to worry for a few months!

I run an Aplha system on my 1.8 Zetec and had the limiter upped from 7200 to 7500 by Aldons just outside birmingham although any Alpha dealer should be able to do it. Bit of a pain not being able to do it yourself though.

My friend also runs a trans x box and the same engine set up as you but with the 3.9 diff and Snetterton is the only place he's on the limiter so you may well not need another diff. Have fun trying tho. :D

Get a copy of Classic Ford - usually quite a few in the classifieds in there.

Thanks both!

Can't change anything on the ECU, as these are enforced and monitored by the championship scrutineers.

Thanks John, will check out the ford motoring publications.

I think they were fitted to RS2000's as standard so keep an eye for diffs as advertised for those as well.

Simon. That isn't true. You are allowed to adjust the parameters within the ecu as long as you don't physically tamper with it. i.e. you can take it to an authorised Webber Alpha dealer and get them to change it as Mr Tart says. It is plugged into a computer and adjusted by some software that Webber will not give to joe public.

Look at the regs 5.7.2. I assume this will read the same for this season.

Thanks Keith & sorry Mr. Tart, my bad.... :durr:

I have so much to learn, just keep putting me right - it will eventually sink in !! :bangshead:

Probably want to make sure you have a nicely balanced Dunnell engine before you go lifting the rev limiter to much, eh Mr. Scarfe ?!?!?

Hmmm yes, but, not necessarily to do with a "nice balanced Dunnell engine". Same goes for all.  It is governed by the standard cams we have to use. There is nothing to gain power wise by revving any higher than the 7200 that is factory set. The power actually drops off quite sharply above this. It is however useful to have a limit set up a little bit so you can hang on to a gear if necessary. But as we discussed before, letting it bounce off the limiter in top going down a straight is IMHO a bad thing to do, it will cause damage to the engine. In this case you need the taller diff ratio.

Even I can get 7200 rpm out of my 1300 cc Crossflow running down the Snetterton back straight (mind you I have to run a 4.1 to do it! )

Keith? Anyone?

Is it just the Crown Wheel and Pinion that I'll need or should I be looking for the whole enclosure?

Tracking down a couple of local leads at the moment....  £95 +VAT & shipping seems to be the going rate for 3.54 DIFF FOR ENGLISH AXLE (COMPLETE).

Thanks for any help

Since you're planning on swapping them during the season, then you should get the whole diff which will be much easier and cheaper to change than the CWP.

That makes very good sense, Dickie!!  :t-up:  :t-up:

Or just another set of bigger diameter wheels and tyres  ???
