Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted January 24, 2005 Posted January 24, 2005 Yep, you'll also usually see somewhere on the site's advertising sticky or other customised plates, that they are "strictly for show use, and should not be used on public roads", or words to that effect. And of course, we'd never use them on the road would we Quote
S8ight Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 only ever seen ariel atoms with either no front plate or a stick on one on the front mud guard. sure ive seen one of the new alfas with a stick on plate on the front Quote
Martin Keene Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 i bought a half size No. plate to use in stead of not having one but he said to use an illegal plate was worse than not having one fitted, as you can say i just knocked it off and keep it bhind the chair. I had a similar conversation with a copper about this subject, he said with a small number plate they can also say the intent was there to break the law because you intentionally had the plate made too small. He also said if you didn't have a front plate and got caught, if you say it broke/fell off/etc the worse they could do is give you a producer to fix it. Not that I could recommend such behaivour... MartT Posted January 25, 2005 Posted January 25, 2005 as Gadgetman said ... Is it legal to use on the road? No, all our plates are showplates to be used off road only. Westfield supplied a stick on plate (not fitted) as well as a normal one when they repaired my car last year. The stick on plate has a note on the back saying not legal for road use. Martin Quote

markcoopers Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 Always had a stick on one. Police have never had an issue with the plate i've used, but apparently the car it's attached to or the driver in it, has occasionally been a cause for concern. Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 I think that a Q plate car is arguably legal with a stick on plate. The MOT manual says "For all other testing purposes [other than emissions]they are to be considered as being first used on 1 st January 1971" DVLA says "Traditional number plates fitted to vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1973 are not required to display the mandatory character font, but the characters must be easy to read." So a Q plater should be able to display a traditional plate which doesn't have to comply with British Standard, which is the only reason given by the DVLA for stick on to be illegal. "Are stick-on number plates legal? No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements" Anybody want to test it in court? Quote
a4gom Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 Does this mean we can all have black and silver / white ones if were running Q reg? Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 Does this mean we can all have black and silver / white ones if were running Q reg? I think it does, but remember that legal advice from me is worth exactly what you have paid for it. Quote
a4gom Posted January 27, 2005 Posted January 27, 2005 mmmmmmmmmmmm, now you've got me. i was just looking at some pictures of my car (red with black bits) the other day and thinking it would look good with black and silver plates. Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 Don't blame me if plod take a different view. Can't see the flaw in the argument though. Quote
MartinH Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 I bought a front stick-on number plate background last year which was relective and I had to go through the same procedure as if buying a pukka plate i.e Registration Docs, proof of ID etc. Bought a rear one from the same shop a few months later, no ID needed but it was not reflective and had a note on the back "not to be used for vehicle registation plate" On the subject of penalties I understand that the penalty for having an ilegal plate is £60 + 3 points, having no plate is £40 and no points - the laws an ass Carry front plate in passenger footwell and if stopped say it just fell off!! Blatman Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 On the subject of penalties I understand that the penalty for having an ilegal plate is £60 + 3 points, having no plate is £40 and no points - the laws an ass Er, not in this case. Think about it. If your plate is the wrong size, has letters badly spaced, or any other deliberate alteration, then it is just that; deliberate, pre-meditated alteration. Whether it's for nefarious purposes or not (so that speed cameras can't read it, for instance) the point is that you deliberately set out to break the law. A missing one could be the result of an accident or other force majeure (your "Carry front plate in passenger footwell and if stopped say it just fell off!! ") meaning that there is a perfectly reasonable excuse for not having one, and proving deliberate intent to flout the law would be extremely difficult in those circumstances. The Police can issue a 7 day "fix it or else" ticket so that the "fault" may be rectified, for which I believe a fee is payable for at your local MOT station, so it's not like you can get away scott free if you get nabbed... a4gom Posted January 28, 2005 Posted January 28, 2005 As far as penalties go I have a private plate on my road car, it is same one I have had for 13 years, it is slightly italic and a chubby sort of text. I have been pulled a few times for it and until recently it was only illegal because it didn't have a consistant stroke width. It was fine that it wasn't standard text and it was slightly leaning over aslong as the stroke width and height / width of the letters complied with one of the sets in the regs. The penalty was a ticket to take to a mot station once the plate had been replaced, get it stamped and take it back to the police station within 7 days. Recently the law has changed and I have been pulled twice since then, now it has to fit in with the regs the penalty applied to me was £40, no points. I was done once for this, the second time I had a new set of plates tucked under the passenger seat, I told the pc i had been warned, got some made but hadn't had time to fit them and he let me off. Although I did get a £40 fine for no seat belt. I was quite happy with the £40, I was stupidly doing 90 at the time, no seat belt, talking on the phone with ilegal plates!! He couldn't easily do me for the phone as it was the day before the new rules came in, and as for the speeding he pressed the trigger on the gun again after taking a reading of 90 just to check, luckily I had seen him stood it on his nose and the reading was 73, within the 10% allowed. He said I was lucky and I didn't disagree! Quote
