Willans 4 point harness fastenings

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have the Willans 4 point harnesses and am not sure how they should fasten inside the car body.

Are they supposed to have a spacer washer so the plate at the end of the belt can move, or are they OK just bolted and torqued so they have no movement?

Also, second question: I have run the brake and fuel lines under the drivers side of the car as per the factory instructions, how far apart should the p-clips be that hold the pipes in place? If I have to rivet every 30mm the body of the rivet will push through the panels into the car??

Cheers  :p

I would certainly imagine there should be a spacer so as to allow the belt to move. There should be a purpose made spacer/collar with the belt or fixing kit. It's a top hat shape

Swiftr,

The fitting kit may have changed but when I fitted mine, I torqued them up tight with no movement.

As for the p clips, I think its every 150mm apart (has been a while) where they went through the ally panels I used  domed allen head bolts.  The head inside the car with the thread going down through the p clip and a nyloc nut and shakeproof washer.  If you are fitting carpet then this covers them, if not it still looks neat enough.

Rich/Scottish Bloke,

Thanks for the replies. Didn't have the shaped spacers in the kit from the factory (not that that means there shouldn't have been any  ??? ). Will go without and see what happens.

Think the 15mm rule rings a bell. Will RTFM to answer that. There will be carpets in to start with, so may use rivets, then if I ever want to shed any excess weight for racing I can think again!

Cheers,

Had my pipes fitted by the factory. These have been riveted through the floor pannels on the drivers side, with tail of rivets visible inside. Carpet will cover so shouldn't be a problem.

Just took out my 4-point Willans harnesses to take off the internal vinyl/ali panel to re-weld my exhaust mounting. My outer harness plates bolted to a threaded tube welded to the chassis, with a tubular spacer between the harness plate and the chassis to allow the bolt to pass through a hole in the internal ali panel. The bolts when torqued up, meant that that the harness plate was fixed solid. Can't remember if the tunnel side harness plates had any spacers as I didn't remove them.

Cheers

I only intend to have carpet for the sva so I riveted the fuel and brake lines with the rivet inserted from the inside, this means the flush part of the rivet is on the inside with the larger part of the rivet on the outside where the p clip is. Seems to hold the clip just as well as inserting the rivet from the outside.

Ahem..............

Please note that the bottom harness bolts should be vertical in relation to the seating position of the occupant and not inclined backwards as in most cars.

This ensures that you are belted in over the hips and prevents submarining and completely prevents belts riding up onto tummies when the shoulder straps are done up.

If your lap strap pulls up when your shoulder straps are tightened believe me your belt is definitely fitted incorrectly and you will submarine in a frontal.

Hilux,

Good point. I have tried to angle mine at 45 deg forwards, but as there's no spacer, it's a b****r to hold them still with the torque the bolts need to be tightened to!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

What I mean is that the lap strap belts (not the brackets) should be upright. The Westy bracket bolt positions are too far back IMO

Aaaahhh! The lights have gone on!

The lap strap belts sit nice and vertical on me and are well wedged underneath my midriff padding.....

Problem is the little un. He's only 5 and very disappointed his booster seat won't fit in the Westie's seats. Will be a while before he's tall enough to fit the Willans properly too (yes he does think I've built the car for him  :D )
