Timo Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 ok so i came home tonight in a taxi and i have had god knows how much to drink since noon but tomorrow, no not tomorrow, this morning when i left the house i left the car at home because i was going on the p***. the news headlines tonight in Belfast claim that 340 people have been caught drink driving since 1st December. 340! thats 340 dick heads who probably rely on the company vectra to get to work on monday morning and now life is effectively on hold for 12 months plus an insurance surprise when they get the books back. i am not holyier than thou. i drove home most friday nights under the influence when i was 22/23 but now i am mid 40s, to have a licence is a little bit more important. rant over. comments gratefully received and no matter what you think i,m p********, im going to bed, its only 7 30 and tomorrow i will delete this thread in embarrassment. goodnight Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 No I second every thing you have just said Quote

Well i'm 22 and its not acceptable at my age either. And its got nothing to do with wanting to keep my licence. Quote
mad lon Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I'm going t'get p******** t'neet and drive me model Catering Van around the living room.Just a little treat for it before it meets the crackers on Christmas Day. Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I always ended up driving 'cos I was too pished to sing.... Anyway if 1 in 5 "moving traffic incidents" are caused by drunk drivers, that means that 4 out of 5 are caused by Sober Drivers (yes that old chestnut) so you see its actually statistically safer to drink and drive. Also heard on the news tonight that in 1999 there were 37 reported Tea Cosy injuries. Now that is frightening. Quote
chazpowerslide Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I had a girlfriend that was killed by a drunk driver 20 years ago, It NEVER goes away. I speak to her mum (her only surviving family) every year and it's worse for her believe me. The driver was dunk in charge of a 32 ton lorry, he killed my girlfriend and paralysed her best mate they were both 18 years old at the time. He then drove on another half mile with the remains of their car wedged under the front of his lorry before making a run for it but was so p******** he only got about 3 steps before collapsing. He was fined £250 (which his company paid) and was'nt even banned on account of the fact that he was going through a bad divorce at the time and hit the bottle (how we wept for him ) We found out that he was back on the road the day after the accident. As you can imagine I have zero tolerence for drink drivers, ban the f*****s for life. There is NO excuse. Chaz. Quote

It must still hurt then Chaz. I must be honest if I am driving I will not touch a drop I just cant see the point. Quote
jeff oakley Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Chaz, I feel for you and for the girls mother, this is the reality of drink driving. The issue here is why there has been such an increase in DD offences, could it have something to do with the lack of police on the roads? Most of these halfwits who drink and drive don,t think they are going to get caught becasue they don't see police just cameras. Alot of those now caught are because of APNR checks and following accidents not becasue of improved policing. I too have a zero tolerance on drink driving so far in three years I have dismissed 4 for turning up for work under the influence and the sad thing is some people think I should have sent them home to sleep it off. I can sleep at nights. Quote
mad lon Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Sorry for being flippant on such a serious thread Quote
Martin Keene Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I read an interesting article on why drink driving is becoming a problem again, I can't remember where I read it, as it just after last new year when it was in the news that drink driving had gone up again. The crux of the article was out of a sample of people questioned most didn't know what the legal limit was, 1 person thought it was acceptable to drive after 5 pints! The article went on to blame the current speeding is public enemy number 1 culture in the police force. Saying too many forces were now reliant on speed cameras, camera vans, etc and not police officers, as a result numbers of traffic officers have dwindled and there aren't enough of them to cope. Make's you wonder... :/ Quote
Frau Vesty Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 Yep agree with you there Martin. Some people just don't care, but others are ignorant. I think a lot of that stems from the fact that the "unit" measurements were set some time ago when wine was around 8-9% and an average beer was 2.5-3%. So people don't realise that a half pint of stella or a small wine nowadays contains substantially more than the 1 unit of alcohol they think it does. I won't drink at all when I'm driving either. I know that my ability is impaired even when I would probably be well below the legal limit, and I don't want to go killing or injuring anyone because of my altered judgement/reaction speed even if I'm technically legal to drive.
