JonnyBoy Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 well, dads 2000 Golf GTi with 'optional extra' metallic paint is starting to peel and flake in a number of places. Its a bit s**t! Lets hope the warranty on paint is more than 3 years... anyone know? VW didnt seem to know... got to take it to the body shop for them to tell me! Quote
GWatson Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 I had this problem with my last rover coupe the car was 4 1/2 years old, and even though the paint warrenty was 5 years the wouldn't sort the small rusty patch as the car didn't have a full Rover service history. Quote
samcooke Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 I'm 97% sure anti-perforation warranty (as VW call it) is 12 years. So you *should* be fine. Quote
samcooke Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Honest John agrees with me : http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/?id=109 Quote

Is it peeling from the Metalwork or the Bumpers / other plastic trim ? Where is the failure? - is it between clearcoat and base (colour) coat, base (colour) coat and primer, or primer and e-coat? JonnyBoy Posted December 22, 2004 Author Posted December 22, 2004 . 12 year anti-perforation guarantee, three year paint warranty and a year’s membership of Volkswagen Assistance. This can be extended at cost . anti perforation is 'holes' in the body work.. not just rust.. seems paint is 3 years according to John. The problem areas are numerous. its mainly a crazing in the clearcoat that has lifted off.. base colour is still evident, bit no metallic or laquor in the worst places. I gave the car a valet clean today, thats why i noticed it. Its not isolated either.. some on the roof, rear 1/4 panel, bonnet. i'll try and get a pic Quote
Blatman Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 If it appears that the general condition of a decent sized proportion of the paintwork is of a substandard quality, and that it's likely that this defect was present (not necessarilly visible) then the sale of goods act will apply... Quote
JonnyBoy Posted December 22, 2004 Author Posted December 22, 2004 ohh.. good, cos my dad was the first person to use the sales of goods act in a court of law in this country or so I believe.. (i may be completely wrong here btw! ) could well have been against a gentleman called Paul H*lfpenny, who, incidently, now has a garage in my village Quote
JonnyBoy Posted December 22, 2004 Author Posted December 22, 2004 this shows both crazing and peeling. this photo is an area of about 2" square. Quote
SteveD Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 bird s**t if not removed will cause paint crazing ,though i have never seen manufacturers paint peel or craze of it's own accord on such a new car ,only of plastics ( and thats not very often ) are you sure it has not had any refinish work , it's surprising how many cars are reworked before the customes see them , Quote
Blatman Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 it's surprising how many cars are reworked before the customes see them , Any such issue would count as a defect present at manufacture, so the sale of goods act would still apply. The onus of proof is on the customer though... Quote
Mark B Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 A collegue of mine has had two new VW Beetles (new type) in the past 3 years or so, both have had peeling paint problems & ended up having the sides painted (which vw made a mess of), don't know whether the golf is made in the same factory though? Quote
Ian Podmore Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 The Beetle is made in Mexico isn't it? And the Golf in Germany. Quote
Blatman Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I thought the Mexican Beetles were for the U.S market... Quote
