Cat B write off

As title really - can you buy back cat B write offs from an insurance company if you intend to strip it for parts and destroy the shell afterwards?  Do you have to be a registered scrap dealer?

As I understand a cat B can only be used for spares and has to be dismantled by a registered dealer. :(

I dont think the insurance company would sell you back the car, though I stand to be corrected if someone else knows otherwise.

Correct indeed. I tried to buy back my 2.0 16V MK3 Astra Sport with the intention of breaking it for spares. I reckoned on flogging the engine on here and flogging all the Sport bits to some Chav in a 1200 Merit to make it look like a Sport.

Wouldn't let me have it cos it was CAT B.

Pushed the subframe back, which pushed the bulkhead back which creased the roof... Nice, best thing that ever happened to it!

Cat C is ok

Some insurers will allow Cat B if you all ready have the salvage and they would have to pay for it to be collected.

in this case they will ask for a destruction certificate of the chassis.

This may have changed over the last year or so but I sucsessfully did this 4 years ago

Mine got written off (don't know what catergory) but got messed about that much by insurance company they let me keep the car (still rinning round in it 2 years on) back on the road the next day parts to repair paid for by legal assistance because insurance company wouldn't give me a loan car so needed to make it legal in the mean time.  :D

"B" is for BREAKER, and not unless your a registered salvage agent or have a "bent" insurance man. And I don't mean one with a limp wrist

errr no a salvage yard  wont sell you a cat b ,b is a  breaker for spares , c's a d's are for repair , a's are crushers

cat d's you can apply for a log book straight away ,

cat c's should  need a vic check once repaired  ,somtimes not if your lucky   vans pick ups and bikes do not apply ,a vic check is used  to establish that you have repaired the car you bought not ringed it etc ( chassis and engine number check ) not repair quality , which should apply ....................... :t-up:

Mine was a CAT C but there`s no marker on the DVLA or VOSA system so it`s just a case of re-registering it.

Bummer is it`s a 4-6 week wait now to get the new docs back.

Just want to break it for spares it had a lot of extras and nice bits that are worth about 2k in total.  Including a brand new rear beam from when he crashed it the first time :bangshead::bangshead:

Looks like a bit of pleading with the insurance company might be the only way but I think thats going to be a bit of a long shot. :bangshead:  :bangshead:  :bangshead:
