Hi ,

Made a few things from CF, for me model aircraft. I used it just like fibreglass, but "Cured it " in the oven.

Cleaned it up (the part not the oven! ) with a Dremel and it was good! although the surface finish wasnt too critical!

Not so sure about larger pieces, I know they use "Pre Preg" cloth with the resin already applied, just needs forming, vacuuming and heat!

You need a good mould, as the cloth (like fibreglass) takes the finish of the mould.

Be worth some more investigation.

just remember that if you use prepregs they have a fairly short shelf life  :(

Wet lay CF is similar to GRP to work with. Main differences from a working perspective are, you don't need gelcoat with epoxy resins used with carbon fibre, and using a woven material means you need to think more carefully about double curvature and corners than you would with chopped strand mat. You need to make darts and stuff - knowing somebody who knows about dressmaking would be a bonus for more complicated components! ;) This is one of the reasons why you often see cheaper CF parts with black sections where you can't see the cloth, a layer of black gelcoat is hiding the tricky/messy bits!

You don't need ovens etc for wetlay CF, only prepreg. Pre-preg will also require a freezer to prolong the shelf life of the cloth, and a vacuum pump with associated bags etc to do the layup with.
