pistonbroke Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 But who is correct ? which method possibly leaves the biggest emotional scar ? short smack or mental anguish Quote
Nick M Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 In my lifetime I have seen folk lay into their children simply because an incident has caused the parent embarrasment. Is that an excuse? I don't think so Same here, and we absolutely try and avoid getting caught in that trap. Still end up in situations where it's easier to leave than try and sort the problem there and then, e.g. Erin being a pain in a restaurant. Quote
Nick M Posted December 10, 2004 Posted December 10, 2004 But who is correct ? which method possibly leaves the biggest emotional scar ? short smack or mental anguish Neither ? Both ? It depends ? Erin knows now, without a shadow of a doubt, that stealing is wrong. She's not been avoiding me and doesn't cower when I enter the room (quite the opposite) so I'm guessing she's not still suffering from the experience. Smacking, IMO, is a last resort. Use it too often and it loses its effect. I only ever use it as a method of stopping some particularly bad behaviour which can't be dealt with by talking to her because she won't listen or wants to keep pushing us. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often, to the extent that I can't remember the last time I had to resort to it. Both of these are very, very different from beatings or emotionally brow-beating a child into submission by controlling or dominating them. Basic discipline shouldn't leave any emotional scars. Quote
