Howard Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 What is it with students these days? Nothing against them per se, I was one once, but: I live on a fairly quiet cul-de-sac at the end of which there is a footpath leading to a university campus. A steady stream of students strolls up the road. The road. Not the pavement. Three abreast, and they play chicken with passing cars forcing them onto the wrong side of the road or to stop completely. What I want to know is, if it came down to it and one of them got knocked down, who would be in the wrong? I’m talking middle of the day, clear conditions, empty pavements, perfectly sober but very arrogant young student walking towards motorist, fully aware of what he is doing. I think I know the answer and it’s not worth the points on my licence, but ooooh it makes my blood boil. Seriously, I’d be interested to know what the law is on this. Another pastime is wearing personal stereos, hands thrust into pockets, staring resolutely straight ahead and walking across busy junctions whilst everyone else takes avoiding action. Or stepping into the road at t-junctions without looking behind them, just as you’re turning left off a main road. Run the bu**ers over. That’s what I say. Never did me any harm. Too many of them anyway, denigrating the significance of what a degree really stands for. Not like in my day. Soon everyone will have one. They’ll be giving them away in Cornflakes packets next. These idiots are supposed to be our future. Grrrrrrr. Breathe. Breathe. And relax. Rant over. Quote
Two Dinners Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 I am not saying this is a good idea but I almost got one once crossed the road in front of me looked me in the eyes and stepped off the pavement in front of me in no hurry trying to make me stop. Well like you I was getting p****d off with them and floored the accelerator (modified Nissan Turbo) the car took off almost as fast as the lad did I got one more look in his eyes before he got to the pavement and startled rabbit sprung to mind. I felt very silly after doing it as if he had not moved as quick as he did I would have had him so don’t do it. It was many years ago now and I was almost as daft as the lad was. Quote

What degree did you do? i agree with what your saying 100%, however if unis stand a chance of surviving they have to offer these courses, as profit driven unis (mainly polytechnics) offer stupid degrees to anyone willing to pay - hey cant fault them, better than getting job, regardless of their prospects. For the record, i ve slogged my guts out through having to do A'level maths and physics, and now in my final year at uni studying for a mecanical engineering degree (Beng (hons)). What i would consider very important career wise. alternatively i could have 'sacked' off my a'levels gone for a 'smoke' with the others and to the pub at lunch time - low and behold i could still have gone to a poly and done some motorsport degree (so-called numpty degree) and still beaten me to a job......this annoys me more. Blatman Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 I think it's dodgy territory. If you see them and decide not to stop, then it's a pre meditated action, so attempted murder could be the charge. If you didn't see them, then you're driving without due care. It'd take a smart solicitor about 10 minutes to get you convicted.... Besides, this isn't limited to students. Drive around central London any lunch time, or *any* time around Christmas, and pedestrians are like lemmings. Foreign tourists are lemmings looking the wrong way before stepping off against a red "Don't walk" sign... Nothing you can do but hoot and salute.... On a more practical note... Complain to the college about their students causing a traffic hazard whilst not exercising reasonable caution in a potentially dangerous environment, and that you'll be writing to the council/police/local E A about their standards of student care and what steps the police/council might like to take before a student gets hurt, and a motorist is wrongly accused of a crime. Also tell them you feel that they are failing the students badly in the area of road safety, as well as annoying a number of local residents. Say that you consider the actions of the students to be anti social..... Should get a response from "Nanny"... Quote
I.S.M Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 i think here is where i say i agree with Prince Charles 100%, hes only saying what anyone doing something worth while is thinking. I ll go out and work, meanwhile paying for the numpties who should have just done an apprentaship and saved everyone loads of money by doing a pointless degree. Down with the NUMPTY DEGREE! Quote
CateringVan Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Maybe they are law students studying the UK compensation system and want a test case to try out Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Blatters I have had cause to get in touch with the local collage re the kids walking in the road and jumping off the kerb in front of me. All I got was an attitude from the Head of what are you ringing me about it for No great surprise then that people feel like running them down (P.s. that is not a recommendation) Quote
I.S.M Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 i ll run em down when i ve graduated! I recommend people doing pointless stuff have got far too much time on their hands and thus have clean clothes on......look out for them..... Quote

Before a rant about falling standards & quality of education - check your spelling & punctuation I agree however with the sentiment having also done an Engineering Degree (Chemical) in '79. Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 What it is is this: 'cos schoolkids are now called students, the old, what used to be a student, thinks that he's at liberty to behave like a pupil. But, pupils, being students now, just go and get pregnant at 14. Simple really! Quote
S8ight Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 just get out of your car and punch one of them square on in the face Quote
mr-rad Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Local to me there is a corner reffered to as Lemmings Corner, as i approached it the other day 5 fifteen or sixteen year old kids steped off the curb and dawdled there way across. Getting a bit p****d off wi the attitude of the young i increased speed then hit the brakes stopping just short of them. Little did i know that the bloke coming the other way had had the same idea. Oh Boy did they jump!! You may be in trouble if you so much as clip one of em, but theres nowt wrong wi giving them a damned good fright!! Quote
Howard Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 You're all absolutely right, of course and I'm not going to put the theory to test. Might drive round with a roll of red carpet in the boot and leap out with it next time someone tries playing chicken. That'll take the wind out of their sails. Maybe not. I might get carted off to the funny farm. Loughborough is a small town with a large university - something like 10,000 students - so it is quite noticeable. A letter to the uni or the council could be in order but it may be just p******** in the wind. Jamie, good luck with your final year. I did Industrial Design/Engineering at Leicester as a mature (ha! student about 20 years ago, after being made redundant after doing an electrical engineering apprenticeship. Career paths can make some unexpected twists and turns over the years...I've also spent time in a sales office, and interior design company, and as a wireman wiring up control systems for oil rigs and BNFL. Spent the last 14 years managing a team of designers designing and developing cosmetics display units around the globe. What was it someone said about persuading people to spend money they haven't got, on things they don't need... Funny old world. Quote

Well done, but good job you did stop, other wise unfortunatley it would be you in the wrong Trouble these days is everyone seems to have rights, but conveniently have forgotten the responsibilities that should go with them Starting with the polititians at the top and working downwards.
