Stuart Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 Flown into Birmingham from Brussels today (very interesting with the winds) and about 5 minutes away from landing flew over an airfield which obviously had been turned into a track. Sort of shovel shaped with the track actually painted in wiggly white lines on the runway. Possibly some sort of dirt bike track in the middle of the shovel end (was a bit cloudy). Looking at the map would guess Northampton area. Anybody any ideas? It looked pretty good from the air. Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted February 26, 2002 Posted February 26, 2002 I'm assuming its not Silverstone ! I would guess that its Bruntingthorpe which is close to the A14. Quote
Robertio Posted February 27, 2002 Posted February 27, 2002 I'd agree, it is probably Bruntingthorpe, been around it in my old Impreza, very high speed (over 140mph on both straights) with a very abrasive surface. I was only doing one lap at a time from a standing start, the tyres were smoking after the lap, and the brakes were blue :0 It cost us well over £50 an hour each, but there were only 4 of us (we were suppose to be on a driving course at MIRA, but it was frozen off, so Don Palmer took us along to Bruntingthorpe so as to not waste the whole day) Wouldn't say it was a westie sort of track, you'd spend all your time in either 4th or fifth Quote
Richard Salisbury Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 It's Fen End - I worked there. Used to be Lucas Girling site and it was a brake testing track. The site is now owned by Prodrive - they have a rallysprint course and a kart track there too. I've flown over it many times myself! Glad to be able to answer your question. Quote
Chris Elworthy Posted March 6, 2002 Posted March 6, 2002 It's Fen End Where exactly is Fen End ? Quote
mmmmdonuts Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 Ditto that, where is it, and is it any good? Being at High Wycombe, there are no tracks near me really. It sounds like that one would be closre than most. Quote
peterg Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 By Autoroute, Fen End near Hitchin is 61 miles from you and Kemble Airfield (used by www.easytrack.co.uk) is only 63 miles so try there it's a good track and they are well organised too. Quote
Richard Salisbury Posted March 7, 2002 Posted March 7, 2002 NO No No - Fen End is Oldwich lane East, about 1 1/2 miles from Chadwick End, 3 miles out of Knowle heading for Warwick. Like I said, it's owned by Prodrive and its a private engineering development site - you certainly won't get access to it! I worked there for 6 years whilst it was owned by Lucas/TRW and never got to play on the track except for occasional trips in brake development vehicles! It used to be an airfield in WW2, it was called RAF Honiley - that appears on the map! Bye for now chaps!!! Richard Quote
