steppenwolf Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I could do with upgrading the firmware in my Minolta Dimage 7 digital camera, however, whereas in the USA you can get the CD to do the job yourself, in the UK, Minolta don't trust us to do the job ourselves and insist on the camera being returned to them! I am not too happy about doing this .... Anyone got the v2.0e firmware upgrade that they would let me have a copy of? P.s., not looking for a freebie! Quote
Blatman Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 Try looking on one of the peer to peer networks, like WinMX or Kazaa (lite). You'd be amazed what's available... I trust you've already searched some U.S camera BB's to see if it's downloadable? Please tell me you have... Quote
steppenwolf Posted December 3, 2004 Author Posted December 3, 2004 U.S camera BB's to see if it's downloadable? Please tell me you have... Oh yes, I have searched .. I can find v2.01e and later all over the place but they will only work if you already have v2.0e installed! I have considered signing up to WinMX, Kazaa etc. but as my home PC is also my work PC, I am a little concerned that joining one of these 'networks' will result in a compromise to security on my own network! I have heard of nasty things happening to PCs using these services and although I currently use the Internet extensively, I enjoy a fairly robust set of security measures at present that I don't want to risk. Having said that. maybe it is just a matter of not blindly 'accepting' all the options they offer you at sign-up? Quote
steppenwolf Posted December 3, 2004 Author Posted December 3, 2004 Apparently WinMX and Kazaa both have the upgrade that I need which leaves me with a dilemma .... how safe is it to use either of these two networks? Quote
Blatman Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I've used WinMX a bit, and it's been fine. I would have thought that you'd be quite safe to load it up, search for what you want, then once downloaded, delete WinMX... FWIW, I have only a single folder (which contains things I want to share with the world) visible to the WinMX network, which was easy enough to set up even for an amateur like me... If I remember, I'll have a look for you this weekend, although I have 2 free parties to go to this weekend so it might be Sunday before I'm compus mentis enough to work the on switch... Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 Kazaa is reported to include a load of spyware. I use the spyware free KazaaLite, which is now quite difficult to get hold of. Apparently Kazaa threatened legal action against the ISP's that hosted the file, which seems rather ironic to me.... If you know the filename that you want I could search and e-mail it to you if I can find it. Quote
steppenwolf Posted December 3, 2004 Author Posted December 3, 2004 Thank you both very much! As it happens, it is Kazaa that I have heard the adverse comments about so maybe WinMX is the way to go, ( or Kazaalite if I can find it! ) I will try and discover the actual file name that I require. Quote
