Petrol fumes...

Hi All

SWMBO is going mad as the our house always stinks of petrol fumes.

We have an integrated garage and after I have run the car (garage door open obviously) there is a gradual build up of petrol fumes in the garage, then leaking through into the house.

I presume this is down to unburnt fuel in the carbs just evaporating, but she is going spare at me!

Anyone tackled this before? (without changing SWMBO, moving house or selling the car  :D )

Anyone fitted an extractor fan in their garage or know of any neutralisers?

I get the same problems, mostly when the tank is full.

I just leave it on the drive to cool down, then put it away.   By then the excess fuel has evaporated.

Had this problem on my old Westy, turned out there was a tiny leak from the fuel tank, couple with lots of fuel hanging around the carbs it STUNK!  Parents made me get rid of it or I was gonne be kicked out :(

New Westy with injection and new tank doesnt smell at all after a run, I always push it into the garage after a blat.

I had same problem, tracked it down to perished fuel pipes  :0  :0 .

Also one of the carbs wasnt shutting off properly ie leaking fuel into the engine all the time, didnt figure it out for a while but it probably caused the early demise of the engine in that it was effectively stripping tube 4 of oil allowing it to get very very hot

It right now though changed carbs and a engine rebuild later

Check it out thoroughly I thought it was fuel in the carbs at first too but since the rebuild the smell has gone.  ???

ok, sounds like I could do with a bit more investigation work...

All of the perishable hoses at the front end of the car have been replaced with nice new steel braded ones as part of my winter rebuild.

Didn't do anything with the back ones though, and they are probably 15 years old.

bear, you mentioned that you had a problem with your carbs - was it a broken spring or something else?

Having just finished an entire engine rebuild, (although didn't do anything with the carbs) - perhaps they need some TLC?

I'm going out to buy some draught excluder for the door.... (and one of those new automatic airfreshner things that was on TV)

Another thought...

Suppose it could spur me on the get TB's...

I wonder if I can get away with telling SWMBO that is going to cost 2k to fix  :p

I have the same problem with an integral garage.  My car leaked from the fuel sender gasket and the Dellorto carbs had a small hole in one of the throttle pump diaphragms.  The car stank of fuel.  It is now leak free but the tank has a vented cap.  It still smells a bit when hot but as far as I can tell it is all coming from the carbs via the air filters.  I tend to leave it for an hour or so to cool down after a run.

Internal wear I'm told, they were Solex carbs and the received wisdom is that they were rubbish to start with and then wore out!!!

Have Dellorto's on now much better, but a bu##er to start when cold???
