Pete Collins Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 I downloaded an AVI file yesterday. When I tried to play it (using Windows Media Player) it went out to the internet to download a required codec - but failed. I then tried to play it using RealOne. Again, it went out to the internet looking for an appropriate codec - and failed, although it, at least, had the decency to say it was looking for "DivX". I searched the internet for "DivX" and downloaded something called "3ivx". I've installed it and the AVI file plays OK. Today I've found another DivX codec - called "DivX". The download file is much larger than 3ivx (7.5MB vs 1MB). Questions: Does anybody know enough about the DivX codec to give me any advice? Are some codecs better than others? What does everybody else use? - and why can't Media Player find the appropriate codec and install it automatically? Regards Pete Quote
SparkyB Posted November 21, 2004 Posted November 21, 2004 There are quite a few DivX codecs around..... best solution I've found is the Nimo codec pack (can't remember site address) about 7Mb and it seems to cover everything I watch. I don't use the 'Official' DivX codec cos it has adware attached (unless you pay) and the DivX player isn't great. If u can get hold of a recent version of Nero that also has a lot of codecs that cover most things... In terms of quality I haven't noticed much difference between any of the codecs I've used, they either work or don't. HTH Mark Quote
