Thrustyjust Posted November 15, 2004 Posted November 15, 2004 the breather on my old x flow was routed up over the rocker cover,so making the oil run back to the crankcase and then went down to the catch tank on the passenger footwell. It was an open breather type and stopped all the problems I had with the crank throwing the oil straight up and out of the breather pipe and used to fill the catch tank in less than 50 miles. For the rocker cover I just put the ford gauge breather cap on. My Zetec, like the x flow has a standard 'baffle pot' on the side of the block. This stops the oil from flying up the breather and on over run,if you had the standard intake manifold etc, which most of us don't,without it,would cause a James Bond style of smoke screen,as the poppet valve only opens on vacuum.Burtons supply the open breather fitting to remove this, from a x flow, although by just cutting out the poppet valve will allow the sump to breath and then allow fumes to pipe over to the catch tank. The baffle tank will not allow oils to escape to the pipework, just vapour. My latest car, also has the tank located on the back of the passenger footwell and with 1500 miles has only made about 3mm of oily residue, yet does breath as you can smell it.Putting the tank where it is,means that when the need arises, you can slide a drip tray under the car and drain it out.I think that sensible plumbing as Blatters says would be better than where its placed.
