speedy jon Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 hi all, iv been thinkin 4 awhile now about which 1 to go 4, a aeroscreen or a windscreen.my westys not goin to be entered in any races but i will have the odd track day here and there.can any 1 give me any advantages or disadvantages of both aero and windscreen? thanks Jon Quote
timd Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Aeroscreen improves the performance of the car, mainly by not having to push a ridiculous plank of glass through the air, but also by allowing a fair chunk of weight to be removed. Downside is you get soaked more when it rains. Quote
Enterpryse Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 I built my car earlier this year with a screen and then changed to Aero, and pleased I did. It still needs a little tidying up though on the inside but makes the car a lot more fun to drive IMO. Just think of thr weight saving too :-) Quote
neilwillis Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 The only downside to aeroscreens is that if you intend to compete in your car, and it isn't bike engined, you'll find yourself in modified classes, and not very competitive. The upsides as far as I see them: You can see where you're going in the rain. The car looks sleek n sexy (unlike the driver in my case) It's substantially more aerodynamic (sevens need all the help they can get there) The car is lighter cuz you don't need luxuries like windscreen wipers and a heater You get to wear shades whatever the weather! felters Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 A very different experience without a screen. A lot of people move to Aeroscreens... few seem to go the other way. Where are you? Worth blagging a ride in a screenless car forst I'd have thought. Quote
samcooke Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Wear a helmet. Otherwise you'll be killed slowly by flies or immediately by a stone. Quote
SADDLEWORTH Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Can you drive without a crash helmet Quote
Major Stare Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Yes you can........but stones, gravel, flies can hurt I removed my windscreen this summer and its made a world of difference as mentioned by timd neilwillis. DO IT !!!!!!!! Quote
woz Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 Are you building the car yourself? I was told that the aero screens can be a bit of a pig to fit, getting the angle right to allow adequate visability etc and the fact that offering them up to mark the fixing holes is hard due to the studs being moulded in to the body of the aero screen. Still no-one said it was easy. Quote
speedy jon Posted November 6, 2004 Author Posted November 6, 2004 hey thanks 4 all the replys every1. yeh me and my dad are buildin our 1st kit car. will the car pass the sva with the aero on? also will a tonneau cover still fit. sorry bout all these silly questions Jon Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 6, 2004 Posted November 6, 2004 yes and yes a lot of folks have found it somewhat easier to get through SVA with an aeroscreen (or none at all) Tonneaus fit no problem Quote
DanB Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 I drove about 1000 miles in an aeroscreened Striker during the se7ens list tour over the spring this year. Shades and a cap only, no helmet. No probs. Personally, I like aeroscreens - se7enesque cars with a windscreen need two sets of wipers (one on the outside, one on the inside), have even worse aerodynamics, and you can't breath above 60mph. I'd go for the aeroscreen. Quote
Rob Navin Posted November 7, 2004 Posted November 7, 2004 The only downside to aeroscreens is that if you intend to compete in your car, and it isn't bike engined, you'll find yourself in modified classes, and not very competitive. Point of order Have you checked out what engine was in the Class E winning car for this year ? I thank you Edited to say that having had a windscreen and a Aero on the same car I would never go back to a windscreen now.. The Aero makes the car seem lots faster and a lot more fun. Quote
scott beeland Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 There are plenty of competetive cec aero'd cars out there (mine probably will be when I learn to drive better ). Having had screened westfields (2) and now an Aero.....I would NEVER go back to a screen. Quote
andyfiggy2002 Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 no probs with flies or stones, looks much more racy with aeroscreen, I put helmet on if it rains or I want to act a bit of a hooligan & sunglasses if I'm in pose mode Quote
