Big R Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 I’ve fitted the optional round rear lights and carbon effect housings as supplied by Westfield. The red reflectors that come with the kit are rectangular (90x40mm). I’ve seen round reflectors (55mm dia) and thought they would look more in keeping. Does the SVA manual state any minimum dimensions for the rear reflector? I’m a bit concerned that the round ones are about 46% smaller than the standard ones supplied. I don’t want to fall fowl of the authorities on such a simple matter – any advice greatly appreciated. Quote
Glen H Posted October 30, 2004 Posted October 30, 2004 I passed SVA with round reflectore approx 40/50 mm in diameter, purchased from SVC SVA manual states they should have either ' 1' or '1A' stamped on them or be of the same standard. Glen 'SVC' Quote
Big R Posted October 31, 2004 Author Posted October 31, 2004 Glen thanks for the reply very nice looking car - I hope it goes as well as it looks. Is that a carbon fibre dashboard you've fitted.? If so, did you have any problems with the instrument external radius being less than 2.5mm.? I understood the main benefit of the padded versions was the fact that the instruments get recessed as they were tightened up. I'd like to avoid padded vinyl where ever possible...... Quote

I could do with knowing the answer to this one myself. Quote
Glen H Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 The dash board in the picture was only temporary black plastic fitted purley for SVA purposes, I have since changed the steering wheel to one containing indicator buttons etc and changed the layout slightly, hence the cheap temporary dash (yet still to be changed to the carbon one). With regards to the instruments/radiused edges, there is/was as exemption zones, as below, where your are/were exempt from the radiused requirement * Behind the diameter of the s/wheel. * Between the s/wheel and the nearest windscreen pillar. * In an area within 127mm of the outside edge of the s/wheel, however I have today checked this in a PDF of the SVA manual that I have but am unable to find/confirm this. This may be becuase its been updated since my SVA in May 04 or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place/section. I did check this with the test centre before and during the test and they confirmed the above. It would be worth checking this with your local SVA test centre, they are usually pretty helpful on these matters. The 127mm was from the outer edge of the wheel and then in a vertival line, not 127mm following the arc of the wheel, this gives you plenty of room for a decent layout. Glen Quote
VX2L16V Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Is this 127mm dimension still applicable to sva? Cheers, Paul. Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Is this 127mm dimension still applicable to sva? Cheers, Paul. I presume so, as that's why people normally put the foglamp switch nearest the wheel; it's edges fail the radius test, but in the furthest right cuttout it falls within the 127mm area and so is exempt. I guess the same reason for all the toggle switches and the hazzards being where they are. Quote
VX2L16V Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Cheers Dave, I gambled that it would be ok & mounted all my switches earlier Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Unfortunately the 127mm rule and the fog lamps got me; as I've no windscreen, I'm using what WF call the Mega dash, same as normal, except only the centre two switches are precut. and of course this meant I couldn't get my fog lamp switch close enough to the wheel. Ended up taking the switch apart and Dremeling a suitable radius on to it. Quote
VX2L16V Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 I'm using little toggles as opposed to rockers on a fluke carbon dash so I'm a bit concerned about the whole sva dash thing! The only 'standard' gauge I've got is mechanical oil pressure so it's all proving to be 'interesting' Quote
