Steve20 Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 I am building an SDV, running Zetec 1800 with an MT75, the Westfield quickshift is £240 for the complete assembly but Burto Power advertise a quickshift kit to convert the existing lever at £53, anybody tried one ?? Regards Steve Quote
deller Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 I fitted one and it works fine. However the bulbous part of the shift is a different radius to the original - it's slightly bigger and doesn't fit into the teflon carrier. I overcame this problem by removing some of the material from the inner face of the carrier with a dremel (small drill) and a spherical grinding bit. It retains the original braket and works out a lot cheaper than the westfield item that from what I have seen seem a little prone to failure! cheers Paul Quote
thos Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 I fitted mine without any problems, dropped straight in as a replacement. Here's a pic of the part replacement, original on the left, Burton on the right. Made a nice difference Quote
GWatson Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Guys, Thinking of doing the same mode this winter, either Burton or Westfield can't decide. Can the burton one be fitted without removing the gearbox? i.e from the top of the tunnel? It's just the Westfield one looks huge in comparison, it has all the frame work, does it position it in a different place? G Quote
adhawkins Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 The Westfield one can be fitted through the top of the tunnel. It was done on my car (thanks Rob ). He had to drill a couple of holes in strategic places in the footwell though. Andy Quote
thos Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 You'll need the gearbox out to fit the Burton one I'm afraid. Quote
GWatson Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Think I'll be taking the engine out anyway, need to change the clutch release bearing anyway. Quick question, when I last removed a gearbox it was a type 9, removed the prop and quickly attached a plastic cap to stop any fluid coming out, is it the same idea on the MT75. Anyone know if the same plastic cap will fit the MT75? G Quote
deano.1 Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 MT75 prop bolts onto a flange instead of sliding into the box so you wont have the same problem!! Quote
deller Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 You don't need to take the gearbox out just undo the two bolts that hold the black gearlever/selector bracket and lift it out. That' s what I did on mine - it goes in and out easily - plenty of space. I did drill a couple of holes in the ally panels in order to access the bolts more easily. Just sealed them with a couple of grommets after. Incidentally another hole like this makes accessing the gearbox filler plug a lot easier and allow you to change the gearbox oil much more easily! GWatson Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Deano, Ah, that's good news. What's the best way to do it then? Undo it from the diff side first then the gearbox? Or just the gearbox side and leave the prop attached to the Diff, wouldn't of thought so mind you, would make refitting gearbox difficult. Thanks again. G Quote
thos Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 The prop has a sliding joint, so you can disconnect from the gearbox side first and remove the gearbox. I left the prop connected to the diff, and wasnt too hard to re-fit that way. Tom Quote
GWatson Posted October 25, 2004 Posted October 25, 2004 Ah, sounds like a doddle... has the engine out and in so many times, but never the gearbox..Westfield quickshiftit is then for the winter Thanks Tom. G Quote
Jester Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 The WF quickshift moves the lever back by about an inch and a half which aids with the clearance from the dash. If you have carpets, the gear lever gaitor will not be in the right position, and will need to be adjusted. The Burton quickshift will be in the same position as the original lever. J Quote
GWatson Posted October 26, 2004 Posted October 26, 2004 Thanks Jester, I am pretty happy with the current position. I'll measure up tonight and she if I am happy with it moving back a wee bit. Bit of a pain having to replace the carpet. The Burton one will be much cheaper overall, if it's just as good a feel I'll go with it. G Quote
