Blatman Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Beware you don't upset the offset of the caliper. No point in it being straight if the disc is now off centre... You could add spacers of course, but that's more lathe time, and another potential area for less than perfect machine work leading to more trouble. For the price, a set of recon calipers is the way to go, no question. Quote
stu999 Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 Just thinking out of the box, but I cant understand why they would have been modified. Unless they have been modded to 'hide' something else that is bent/out of true... IIRC didnt the cozzy have bigger rear discs fitted? That might mean that the brackets might be slightly taller... pete g Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 machine 1/16 off and then use a 1/16 washer job done i got cosworth discs on rear 272x 10mm ,use standard caliper with spacer bracket, Quote
custardtart Posted October 20, 2004 Author Posted October 20, 2004 You're right, it would be easier to start from scratch but I have just bought new calipers(didn't come with the part I need though) so don't really want the expense even though I could probably put them in as an exchange. I'm just a tight bar steward I guess. It may well be a case of them hiding a bent axle or something else but until I fit properly true brackets I can't be sure. It's one more thing to eliminate. Don't be surprised if there's a post soon "anyone selling a straight rear axle?" Cheers for all the help though, I now know at least what I'm looking for. I've just popped round the local breakers but no luck yet. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 brakes international sell the bracket your after too. Quote
injidup Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 If it helps, I am just about to put these calipers on a Mk2 Escort axle in my SEW. I have had to get 7.5mm milled off the brackets so that they fit the adaptor plates mounted on the axle. This is because the mounting plates are located in a groove around the axle, which is about the best place to put them. Without grinding some metal off the discs won't fit in the calipers. It's just possible that this is what was done to yours, but it simply wasn't done very well? I'm getting them milled, to make sure all 4 lugs are gound flat and equal. Maybe yours were just done by hand? Kev. Pics here (before milling) Quote
Mark B Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 Just for the record, All 2WD sierra cosworths have the same rear brakes as fitted to XR4x4, Granada etc with solid rear discs as fitted to a westy, but the later 4x4 sapphires (late G reg onwards) and escort cosworths had vented rear discs and as a consequence different calipers. HTH, Mark. Quote
hilux Posted October 21, 2004 Posted October 21, 2004 peugeot discs fit (cheap too) and have a `slightly` different offset which may mean that you machine less or not at all HTH Quote

Pics here (before milling) Thanks for that, I think they were most definitely done by hand as the are very uneven and differ in the amount ground down on each one. I was wondering why anyone would do this which led to thinking something might be out of align so it's good to know it was probably just that they didn't fit with the discs. I'm not sure why new ones weren't supplied with the new calipers I bought recently but after a few trips today to local breakers and still no luck I think I'll try an engineering firm and get them milled flat then offer them up to see if they need spacers. If this doesn't work then I'll be off to get some new ones.Failing that then seeing if anything else is out of align,(ie. axle) Thanks for all the suggestions on other brakes too. Always good to know. Quote
