v7slr Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Title says it all really. I have some experience using one, so I'm not going to break it. I want to do fairly simple work on a bar of 80mm ali (200mm long). I'll need fairly standard cutting tools. One small radius, one as narrow as possible (to cut the bar without wasting too much) and a drill-chuck at the other end which can hold a tool/bit to bore through the middle. I might be able to borrow the centre bore bit elsewhere. I'm prepared to rent the use of it. I expect I'll need a day, but may get quicker as I go along. I'm intending to prototype some extensions to my Jenvey throttle bodies. The use of a pillar drill in the same workshop would definitely be a bonus too. Thanks. Quote
S8ight Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 have you got a dimensioned drawing for what you want to make ? ive had a few bits made by an engineers by me and for the price they charge its not worth the messing around to make the bits myself Quote
v7slr Posted October 15, 2004 Author Posted October 15, 2004 I apologise to all those who do engineering drawings, but my effort is as follows: I need 4. I would like x = 30mm. Sometime later, I might make some silly-long ones, just to see what effect it makes on the power, but 30mm is probably the longest I can use and still get everything under the bonnet (I don't have a hole cut for the air filter). S8ight Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 can get them to price it for you if you want me to ?? the last bit they did for me was about 60mm dia, with about 5 steps in dia along its length and 4 different internal dias. cost £25.00 including they ally it was made from. Quote
v7slr Posted October 15, 2004 Author Posted October 15, 2004 Yes please. That would be very useful. Can you get them to include postage to the Midlands too? I'm grateful for your efforts. Quote
ACW Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 ISTR your from woofter, Ive got a lathe, mill, tig etc. that you should be able to play with to sort this out no probs. Send me an email acw@ggr.net. I'm near upton. Quote
S8ight Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 will call in and see them in the morning. p+p should be about £5.00 Quote
v7slr Posted October 15, 2004 Author Posted October 15, 2004 S8ight, thanks. P&P is very reasonable. If the machining costs are similarly reasonable, I'll go for it. It would be good to have a few different sized sets. I should be picking up my bar of ali next week, so I'll try to arrange a suitable date with Mr Webby. I intend to make much longer spacers than I've quote to S8ight, and to a different design. I just fancy trying a few different options. Thanks to you both. Quote
S8ight Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 just a quick thought, do they need to be oval or can you get away with round ones ?? Quote
v7slr Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 Oval please. They won't fit if they're all round. Using a lathe, I was going to make them round, then hack at them with a hacksaw and file them to shape. I expected to have to finish them by hand, but if a machine shop is making them, I would like them the same shape as the diagram. Thanks. Quote
S8ight Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 just realised its saturday today, so theyre shut till monday. will get back to you monday evening Quote
v7slr Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 No problem. Not really in a rush. Won't be able to build the engine for at least 2 weeks. Quote
