gadrego Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Hi all, My new Westy currently has two sets of wheels. One set are 14" road wheels with 195/45/14 Toyo's all round, the other are 14" compomotives with 205/45/14 Advans all round. My problem is this. I'd much prefer to have one decent set of 13" wheels and tyres, however I love the way the car handles at the moment so I'm reluctant to fiddle too much. Assuming I go ahead with the change, what size wheels/tyre's should I be looking for? The car is a 210 bhp vx so I'm reluctant to go down to 185's at the rear. I was thinking along the lines of 185/60/13's on the front on 6" rims and some 205's on 7" rims at the back. Worried about how this will affect the speedo and gearing as well. Is the speedo easily corrected? Reccomendations please. Oh by the way are Caterham offset ET23 Wheels on a narrow SEi? Quote
Terry Everall Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Discussed before but most people with this set up go for 7" x 15" rims with 205 on rear and either 205x50 or 195x50 on front Quote
Blatman Posted October 13, 2004 Posted October 13, 2004 Yup plenty in the archives.. A 6" ET23 wheel wil fit nicely on a narrow car. Not sure about a 7" rim though. It *may* foul either the body work or the shock, but I can't say for sure. If poss, try before you buy, or at least, measure *very* carefully... FWIW, I run 205-60 rears on a 7" Compomotive rim, and 185-60's on the front, this on my 235bhp Cosworth car... Quote
gadrego Posted October 14, 2004 Author Posted October 14, 2004 Blatman, Is your cosworth a narrow SEi, if so what offset are your 7" rear wheels? Having looked at S8ight's link (and A048 tyre sizes) it looks like I'll go for 185/60/13 on the front and 205/60/13 at the back. Would a 205 fit on a 6.5" rim or am I with going fo a 7"? Quote

That's the problem. I can't remember what the offset of my rears is. I'd go outside for a quick look, but it's persisting down. I'm reasonably sure an ET23 7" rim will fit fine on a narrow SEi, but I don't want to say for sure because I'm not *absolutely sure* at the moment... I do know that the "standard" C******m 13x7 De Dion offset is ET16, and they *don't* fit on the rear of a narrow SEi. I've tried... I used to run 205's on a 6" rim in 2003, so they'll fit on a 6.5" rim no problem. And yes, the Cossie is a narrow SEi. Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 I have 185/60x13 on the rear of my sprint car and the engine is making 188bhp with no real problems. If you go for A032`s in 185/60x13 they are likely to grip better than 205/45x14 Advans anyway. If you are sprinting then the 205/60x13 would be a better choice IMO but the 185`s will work well too. gadrego Posted October 14, 2004 Author Posted October 14, 2004 Think I'll go for a 6" fronts with 185/60/13 048's and 205/60/13 048's on the rear then. Two questions then. My speedo runs off the box. How do I adjust it when I fit the rears (8.5% bigger)? And where's the best place to get a set of KN Minators? Cheers for the help chaps. Quote
felters Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 I wouldn't bother mucking around with the speedo... If you really want you can get a reduction gearbox for the speedo drive but I found it was easier to get a new mechanical speedo made to order. Mine was from ETB. Quote
felters Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Ohhh... meant to add George Polleys for the Minators Quote
S8ight Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Would a 205 fit on a 6.5" rim or am I with going fo a 7"? would say go for 7" Quote
adhawkins Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Ohhh... meant to add George Polleys for the Minators Not sure that Polley's Minotaurs fit a Westfield properly. I've been told you have to fit a spacer, cos they don't fit over the hub properly... Andy Quote
Blatman Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 You've been told wrong... As long as you order the corect spec wheel for your application, they'll fit. Polley don't *make* Minators, they just supply them... Quote
adhawkins Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Ok, I obviously have. I know of two people who say they have ordered Minotaurs from George Polley that have had to fit spacers to get them to fit though... I knew they didn't make them. Andy Quote

Polley don't *make* Minators, they just supply them... err actually blatman my correctly ordered minators didnt fit i phoned polley and said i want minators to fit an early SEi and they said not a problem. but there was (promptly solved by polley). the hub nut sorround on my rear axle is apparently slightly larger than standard and hence they didnt fit. a spacer resolved the problem. i believe this problem is only on a few cars and could probably have been resolved by getting new minators to replace but i didnt bother. gadrego if your still in the north east check out c&s tyres in boro. same price for tyres as polley, dont know about wheels but good for replacements btw i originally had 185s at the rear but went through them fairly quickly, gone to 205s now and they seem to be holding up slightly better (215bhp Vx) Quote
