grumpy old man Posted October 10, 2004 Posted October 10, 2004 was it a main dealer/franchise type operation? they always try to flog you something you dont need my hilux is still on the original front discs at 164k Quote
Dommo Posted October 10, 2004 Posted October 10, 2004 my MINI only needed new pads at 20k, I sold it soon after than so don't know how much the discs last... Quote
Fat Albert Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Why were you surprised? You get what you pay for, the TLC pack for a Mini includes three years servicing and costs £100. Is is suprising that the dealers don't so anything more than change the oil? Quote
Mike H Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 A3 1.8t discs and pads @ 90k, 2 tyres @ 50k other 2 @ 90k A6 quattro front discs and pads @ 50k Audi Warrington told me I needed £700 of work on my A3 2 years ago, since then I spent 10 pence fixing one of the things they said needed replacing (repairing a part that was later replaced under a factory recall), the other 2 have absolutely nothing wrong with them according to my local Audi independent. Main dealer - if it was my car I would have the cam belt changed at 80k Me - why does my handbook say 115k? Main dealer - well if I was buying this car for my wife I would get it done *puke* Me - yeah right! How much then? Main dealer - £400 + VAT Me - f*** off. Local guy - they do swap and change their advice a lot sir, but we'll have a look at it for you Me - ok Local guy - it's not too bad but if you want us to do it it will be £170 all in. Me - nice one Cam belt changed at 100k by local guy. Don't get me started on main dealers Quote
Ian Podmore Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 A rep at work had his wifes Clio serviced at 13k and the front discs and pads were replaced. A quick word in the ear of his friendly auto adviser, and he's been fully reimbursed by the dealer after Renault UK got involved. And for the record the worst car I've had for discs was my R21 Turbo. The front discs used to crack after 45k Had to replace two sets because of it whilst I had it. Quote
Nick A Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 I recently service a friends car a 52 reg renault megan 1.6 it had done 8000 miles from new and the front discs were very badly rusted on the inside edge the pads were making contact on about half of the disc area and it had a bit of brake judder. put this down to the lack of use Quote
steve wilson Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 Just to update u mini dont even take the wheels off until the car has done 30000 miles or is 4 yrs old. My sisters husband also has a mini but its a cooper S and is only 15 months old and done 15000 miles. I had a look at it today and guess what. Yes the rear disks have exactly the same problem. The centre half of the disk is fine but the other half is completely destroyed. There isnt any disk surface left. Surley this must be a fault. To top it off Mini now offer 5 yrs free servicing No wonder they can do it cos they dont do b******* all to the car. Quote
Nick A Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Rear discs don't do a lot of work and if the braking is not hard will rust up and therefore be scrap. most manufaturers don't state that wheels need to be removed when servicing not until the milage is up a bit anyway, normally just a visual check not much more to do on discs. the pads can still seize though and ware unevenly Quote
hilux Posted October 17, 2004 Posted October 17, 2004 my hilux is still on the original front discs at 164k Top bloke cant beat Hilux`s IMO My three hilux`s have had no disc issues........ 1st 285,000 miles, second 185,000 miles and the current one has done 115,000 miles with only two sets of pads including the current set Quote
CharliePsycho Posted October 18, 2004 Posted October 18, 2004 I used to do a set of front pads and tyres on My Subaru P1 every 5k with a set of disks every 10K (always got the disks under warranty!! It also needed a full set of front bushes after 10K. Disks are definetly a consumable item on Scoobies if you drive them "hard" On the other hand, I drive my westie just as hard, and I admit I went through a set of rears in about 3K, but never had a problem with the brakes, which are eye poppingly good - so much better than the scoobies, which would kick in the anti lock before giving you the seriously hanging from the seat-belts feeling. My brakes are the standard M16 with the pads I bought with the car nearly 2 years ago - OK maybe alloy 4 pots might help to reduce the weight, I doubt if they would change the ultimate stopping power. The disks are the bogg standard 'thick' disks, that get a bit of surface rust if I leave the car out in the rain - quick blat sorts that out!! The moral? Modern disks seem to be chocolate. ...© Quote
