New shape MINI

Ive just put new disks and pads all round on my sisters 2 year old 24000 mile cooper. The front disks were trenched and looked like thay had done 100k and were rusty and coroded.

The rear disks had parts of the disk surface missing. I couldnt believe the state they were in. Its just been in for its first major service and the mini garage didnt even touch or claen the brakes   and it failed its MOT because of this.

Its not like she doesnt no how to drive cos her day job is driving a 44 ton cement powder truck.

Most dissapointed.

discs are only designed to last/be at their best for about 18,000 miles

Disks are exposed to the elements and therefore will rust very quickly. Not really the cars fault.

The Mini dealer not checking/cleaning them is a bit more annoying than the need to replace.

My Lexus IS200 had its front discs scimmed at 58,000 and new pads (the first change) at 64,000.

Disc's and pads are a consumable item, but you would like to think that they would have made you aware of this when it was serviced.  I've seen quite a few cars come out of a main dealer service and they haven't even scraped the rust off the edge of the disc, i always do it as part of a service because if that gets between the pad and disc it scores it badley and you won't be getting the most out of them.

Thats what i thought they would have done. There isnt even any sign of the brakes been cleaned. :bangshead:

have you got a copy of the service sheet ?

does it say to clean the discs or does it say inspect the brakes meaning a visual check, thats not saying that they should not have told you they are rusty and worn.

I work for a car manufacturer and most of the people I know with high mileage versions of our cars are getting nearly 100k out of the discs with pads at about 15 - 25K miles

I previously had a vehicle of a different manufacturer and I didnt need to change the discs until 125K miles. So what I'm saying is the discs are designed to last a lot longer, someone is talking :arse:

On the service sheet did they tick or write anything against break clean / inspect, if they did then ask them what happened?

If it wasnt due to be inspected on that particular service, then ask the manufacturer why they havent lasted until the expected service interval

just changed the discs and pads on the wifes Audi A4.Didn't think that 112k miles was too bad.

Last but interval (not oil) service on my old 528 I was told it needed new disks and new pads front and rear. They said they would need to be done in 2-3k miles. I decided to have a look myself and let the cars sensors tell me. Oil service at further 10k no mention, and about 20k later guess what I was told it would need front and rear disks and pads in about 2-3k miles ???  ???

I took it to another dealer and they replaced the front pads and told me the disks and rears had at least 20k left in them.

Car was traded at 80k.

???

I dont suppose the MOT was done by the guy who wnated to do the brakes by any chance ???
