Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 Knackered injectors - too much fuel? Edited to ask what the mileage is and if there's any service history (daft question for a freebie, I know, but worth asking anyway). My 1.8TD Mondeo (same engine as the Escort) has done 205,000 and doesn't do this at all. My Good Lady's 1.8TD P reg escort at 135,000 doesn't either. Regular oil changes are essential for a long life in a diesel, I'm told. Quote
steve wilson Posted September 19, 2004 Author Posted September 19, 2004 Shall i do the injectors first. I dont think it had bn serviced much but it had just had a new cam belt put on before i got it. Its got a nasty vibration coming from the front end as well but its only when you accelerate from 30 upwards. Ive checked all bushes and replaced the bottom arms.Someone told me it mite be the U/J's on the drive shafts. Quote
Gromit Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 What about injector cleaner treatment that you add to the deisel. I`ve never used it myself so only a suggestion. Vibration could be CV, grab hold of the drive shfts and try and twist them if you get any movement their probably on the way out. Check tyres for bulges especially on the inside edge (thats caught me out before now). Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Wheel balancing is a good place to start, especially if the frequency of the vibration is the same as wheel rotation speed. A CVJ vibration could be up to four times that frequency. Something you need to know about this particular car is that unless you start it with your foot on the clutch you get a horrible clatter from somewhere deep in its bowels - it goes away when you blip (if "blip" applies to a stodgy engine like a diesel) the accelerator. They all do it Sir! Quote
Blatman Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Turbo oil seal IMO M reg 1.8D Escort is a turbo free zone.... Quote
steve wilson Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 Turbo oil seal IMO M reg 1.8D Escort is a turbo free zone.... No its a TD. Quote
Blatman Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Really? Blimey, I must've done summat wrong When I was looking around a few years ago, I was never told that Escorts of that era were turbo's... Oh well Quote
stu999 Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 ...hence the title... I think they first appeared on an L plate IIRC... Realistically, the smoke could be a lot of things Steve. Does the smoke smell like unburnt diesel, or engine oil? It *might* just be that the fuel pump timing is out, maybe it was disturbed when the cambelt is put on... Quote
Mrs Westy Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 Really? Blimey, I must've done summat wrong When I was looking around a few years ago, I was never told that Escorts of that era were turbo's... Oh well I've nothing to add, I just thought I'd better quote this quick in case Blatman later edits it and denies having admitted to being wrong Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted September 20, 2004 Posted September 20, 2004 I suppose that if the smoke is blue it's likely to be engine oil and therefore, Hilux's suggestion might be right. If the smoke is black then it is fuel, though. Both our TDs start up with a little blue smoke and then no smoke except when they're clogged a bit. Edited to say: Blatman, "M" (95) models were certainly available with a turbo. Not all have intercoolers, though. Quote
steve wilson Posted September 20, 2004 Author Posted September 20, 2004 It *might* just be that the fuel pump timing is out, maybe it was disturbed when the cambelt is put on... Thanks for all the help guys. I took it to my mates garage tonight and the clever g_t knew straight away what it was. It had a new timing belt put on it a couple of months before i got it and he thinks the pump timing is a little out which was probably done when the new belt was put on. I was so close to getting a new set of injectors today Cheers Steve Quote
