chrisbin Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Would appreciate any views/comments/experience with following: One of our company vehicles - Xreg Mondeo - had the catalyst replaced in September last year under the original warranty. August this year, car back in garage, needs to be replaced again We've been billed for full cost of replacement..... When we disputed, saying its within 12 months, we've been told that the warranty doesn't apply, because the original repair was carried out under the car's warranty, and since we didn't make a contribution (weren't asked for one, mind you), then the parts are not guaranteed.... Anyone else had this?? Goes without saying that I'm disputing..... Quote
peterg Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Sounds about right, when I worked at the Jeep garage one of the things I had to explain to customers is that you don't get warranty on warranty replaced parts I think most manufacturers are the same about this Quote

James Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 But if there is an ongoing problem that had to be sorted out under warrenty and again within a year I am sure you have cause to dispute paying the bill as there is an obvious ongoing problem! Best thing is to check it out with the C.A.B theyl be able to help Ford Quote
Dracoro Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 So what happens if they replace a part under warranty, a few days later it breaks, do you then have to pay. that sucks. When I had the clutch replaced (under warranty) on my S2000, the replacement came with a 1 yr warranty. Quote
peterg Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 To be honest, it depends on the part (and of course the generosity of the manufacturer), 'we' had a problem with brake judder on Grand Cherokees and would replace the discs under warranty if under 12months/12000 miles but if that set lasted to say 14000 miles before warping then they had to pay for a set even though the 'ongoing problem' still existed Quote
7SE Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 When I had the clutch replaced (under warranty) on my S2000, the replacement came with a 1 yr warranty. That just goes to illustrate different companies approach to customer service and confidence in their own quality control. Quote
peterg Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 ...and why I don't work for Chrysler/Jeep dealer anymore Quote
James Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Seems bl**** unfair that someone has to pay full price for 2000 miles if I was a customer and overheard that some one else got a way with it cos there's had done 12000 miles I wouldent put up with it At worst ide sell the car and stear clear of that manufacturer in the future!! James Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 I have a problem with my skoda ocatvia at the moment that the dealer cant fix they have had the car for 7 weeks and dont know whats wrong with it. I have informed them that if I have the same issues after the warrenty has expired I expect them to pay for it esspecially as the bill so far is £2,000.00 so far they havent argued Quote
stu999 Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Mmm. So when the 'Cat' originally failed, was there any explanation as to why? Was anything else replaced as well? Modern cats very rarely fail on there on accord-*usually* something else causes it. Replacing the cat will hide the symptoms (and get it through it's MOT, as this is the first time the problem is picked up as a rule). As this is a repeat failure, evidence seems to be pointing to the fact that the problem that is casuing the cat to fail wasnt fixed in the first place... Quote
windy Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 The warranty is with the part and if this period has not expired before it fails then you are fully entitled to a replacement free of charge. I had a case a while back with Vauxhall. I had replaced a water pump on my car which was knackered (accepted) and bought a new one. After 3 months this new one failed so I took it back to get it replaced. The dealer tried to make me pay for another replacement stating "we need to do the work of fitting it ourself to claim the warranty for the part". I refused to accept this. I then got onto Vauxhall who said I was entitled to a free replacement, the warranty being with the part. They logged my complaint on their system and pursued the claim with the dealer on my behalf. After I went back to the dealer at a second attempt to get a replacement, they again tried to fob me off, but when I quoted the case number that Vauxhall had given me the replacement was given to me immediately. Unfortunately, dealers being franchises, try any sorts of tricks to get your money in these instances. Vauxhall were already aware of this scam where the dealers regularly persuade customers to part with cash & then claim back the warranty money from Vauxhall afterwards. Remember that a warranty claim for a replacement parts benefits the dealer in 2 ways, firstly for reimbursement of the cost of the part & secondly for the cost of their labour. I'd suggest you get onto Ford who I'm sure would be very happy to pursue your case. Note: In the case of Vauxhall several of these types of cases being brought to their attention at one particular dealer leads to termination of their franchise. Hope this helps? Good luck! Quote
S8ight Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 in theory they are right. read the sale of goods act though, a cat should last for a good few years though so you should be able to squeeze a new one out of them FOC Quote
Owen9364 Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 This is the same rule as Honda apply Does sound like you have another problem causing the failure though Quote
windy Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Does sound like you have another problem causing the failure though Yes, sounds like it! Probably another untrained technician unable to correctly diagnose a misfire. Sorry, I've never liked dealerships. Too many bad experiences. Quote
