Luke_Eliasz Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 For those who don't know what the gumball 3000 is, i'll explain: The gumball is a huge road trip, last year it was in europe, but before it was from Sanfransico, to miami, and is approx 3000miles. It isnt a race, but just a load of cool people driving their cars across the countrys (usually sports car, but the few people take taxis/other normal cars ). I've heard It costs $15000 (around £8,000) to enter (goes to charity) and only 200 applicants out of 10,000 or so are accepted. So would anyone ever think of entering it, its a VERY expensive thing to do, but if you have the cash, why not. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Nope 8K would see a few seasons Speed Series and quite a few trackdays Quote
Westfields Rock On Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 why not just follow the feckers as far as poss. a lot cheaper me recons. Quote
Luke_Eliasz Posted August 15, 2004 Author Posted August 15, 2004 lol, i never thought of that, but the thing is, you wouldnt be able to get through all the check points etc.., and plus the £8k (or what ever), pays for acomodation, fuel and food (as well as charity). Although it still would be cheaper, but not as much fun. Quote
Westfields Rock On Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 take a tent. if its on one continent theres no ferrys or such so hit the gas and follow them. i'd take a black 6.6 Trans Am. with a CB. "breaker breaker, this heres the bandit come back" Quote
S8ight Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 sure someone from here did one of the runs last year have a search Quote
perksy Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 Yep, if i remember right somebodys Westy caught fire on the return home leg (in France ??) Can't remember whoose it was but i think it was a Dark blue wide body Quote
scruffythefirst Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 the £8k (or what ever), pays for acomodation, fuel and food (as well as charity). £8k is for entry and hotels only. Fuel, food and fines are not included, and nor are the drinks at the end of day partys. They went to morroco this year, where martin hadland rolled his escort at 160mph+ and put his passenger in hospital with a broken back (he had his harnesses off to get soemthing out of the glovebox). Oh, yeah they were overtaking a ferrari that was overtaking another ferrari, on a normal carrigeway Someone parked their 550 on the roof of a shack and someone else forward flipped their viper at 100mph+ If i was going to do it, it would have to be a big saloon, with air con and a very big cd changer, or soemthing very very expensive.... I've got a short clip of the reyland crash if anyone can host it.... Quote
v7slr Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 bl**** stupid bunch of rich ******s who care more about getting to their hotel and the bar than they do about the cars and the event itself. I'm willing to bet that not one of them has ever seen the original Gumball Rally movie, or the original Cannonball Run movie from which the idea was spawned. None of them will be aware of the original coast to coast "race" earlier in motoring history or those that tried to replicate that like Hal Needham (from whose exploits both the movies were loosely based). The idea that it's fun to get caught by the police just so they can brag about much cash they had to pay in fines is as painful to the true car enthusiast as it is distasteful. If you're interested in genuine car enthusiast stuff, have a look at the Pan American race. You'll need something older than your Westy but a guy entered in a genuine Lotus 7, or why not join in on the Se7ens List tours? They're not meant to be a race, but some are noted for their desires to take the long way to each Hotel, just so that they can stay in the saddle for longer. Quote
v7slr Posted August 15, 2004 Posted August 15, 2004 OK, just read that you're not a Westy owner owing to your age so you're unlikely to join us soon, but don't think that Westy ownership need be as long into the future as you might think. My youngest cousin will be 17 next April and is already saving for a base-build kit Se7en of some sorts. He's determined to be on tour by the end of next Summer. Quote
Blatman Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 It isnt a race, but just a load of cool people... Like V7, I'm inclined to disagree with that assesment of the entrants. They appear to be mostly a bunch of bored rich ******s who actually can't drive very well, but are rich enough not to have to care about it... Quote
worzel Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Agreed........ ........these guys have a complete disregard for the safety of themselves, passengers, other road users and local pedestrians. Good fun to watch on TV though Quote
Luke_Eliasz Posted August 16, 2004 Author Posted August 16, 2004 Good fun to watch on TV though Yeah it is, i bought the dvd. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 The best bit of the whole thing was the line ferrari enzo - £600,000, lamborghini mercialago - £200,000, getting shafted by a ford escort - priceless S Class Merc or SL55 AMG? Lotus carlton Quote
