Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Very tired very stressed........................ Myself and my wife currently rent out 2 houses, which involves a lot of work. On top of that we are currently more or less rebuilding our own, aswell as trying to build the Westfield. At th emoment I am trying to work out if all the extra work is worth it. The houses have gone up in value, but do take a lot of tiem and effort to keep on top of. When I go home from work it feels like I`m going home to a second job, not to relax..........At the moment there just seems no end to it. I know from a previous thread there are a few others who rent outhoses. How do you manage a work life ballance? I have a really hectic job which I enjoy, but somehow need to get time to relax with the wife and the car. One solution is to sell up and focus on my main job. What do you all think?? PS. Feeling worn out and crappy, sympathy would be welcomed.......... Quote
adhawkins Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 PS. Feeling worn out and crappy, sympathy would be welcomed.......... Sorry, the sympathy service is for WSCC members only. Do you use an agency to rent the houses? Wouldn't that remove some of the pain if not? Andy Quote
Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 OK I can take the hint!!!!! I solemly promise to post the form which has been sitting on the dresser for the last few months. Thought about an agent and it might be the way to go. Part of the problem is worrying about it I guess, there is always something to think about.......................... By the way Andy, how are the plans for the UK tour in the Summer going? Quote
adhawkins Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 By the way Andy, how are the plans for the UK tour in the Summer going? We set off tomorrow morning Andy Quote
Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 Fantastic, I am so jealous, I think I`m wiring tomorrow morning, followed by removing an engine, followed by looking at bathrooms......... Hope you both really enjoy it, got a route sorted out? Quote
adhawkins Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Hope you both really enjoy it, got a route sorted out? Not a route as such, more a list of (free) B&B's Current plan is Swindon -> Braintree -> Nottingham (perhaps) -> Kellington -> Skelmersdale -> Anglesey -> Portmeirion (perhaps) -> Swindon. The route will be planned by my ace navigator (aka the Welsh Wizard) as we go along. Andy Quote
Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 Do you guys have wet weather gear? Although I guess Welsh Wizard will be used to the rain considering her naitive roots!!! Quote
adhawkins Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Only wet weather gear is a tonneau cover and waterproofs . Tonneau will be wrapped around the 'luggage' while travelling. Andy Quote
adhawkins Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Nah...it's only water I've never put the weather gear on my car, not sure I'd have been able to get in and out with it fitted. That's all a bit moot now, since I put the new roll bar on it wouldn't fit anyway. Waterproof trousers and a good coat are all you need (along with a hot shower afterwards! ) Andy Quote
chrisbin Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Mat Passed you house last night (with the kids so didn't stop!!! and wondered what was going on!! I reckon Andy's right - pass some of the pain to an agency and get yourself some time back to enjoy what you've got. It may cost you a bit but surely its gonna be worth it? Good luck m8! PS I'm not sure how many other people rent "outhouses"..... Quote
Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 Ooopps, can we have a spellchecker on this thing? Us engineers do numbers not words............. Quote
jeff oakley Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 Have three rented out one is with an agency who get money for nothing in my opinion. The two others are long term to the council, yes you get slightly less rent but you have no agency fees to pay and they give it back as you gave it them so no worries about damage etc. Our homes are long term investments and are less than 10 years old so repairs are not problematic. I would not sell them as these will suplement my pension nicely but can understand the work life balance issue. Just look at all options. Jeff Quote
Mat Jackson Posted August 13, 2004 Author Posted August 13, 2004 I know its probably the wrong thing to sell them, just finding it all hard at the moment, and when I do the sums it looks so appealing!!! But like you say, I have got a really good pension scheme if I hold onto them for the next thirty or forty years. Once the work on our own house is finished, it might make things a lot easier. Thanks for the advice, Quote
Toby Mack Posted August 13, 2004 Posted August 13, 2004 was talking to a land developer last weekend who started out renovating and renting houses. He reckoned it cost him three wives before he realised it was better to spend money to make his life easier. ie £10k for renting another house to live in while doing up his own was money well invested. ie. better home life, wife not stressed => able to enjoy life and do a better job => more money in the long run! As we are in the middle of building work at the moment I can see his point. 10% on the budget would have seen us living in luxury rather than a building site btw. developer guy reckons he is worth a million or so so he must have got something right Quote
