Comical Engineer Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 Looking for some help - any appreciated. Currently cleaning down 2.0 zetec before it goes into the car & was looking for the engine no. so that i can get the correct documentation from Ford to verify the age. Looked at the normal place (exhaust side, top of block, flywheel end, in vertical plane) and it is so badly corroded I can't make it out. Checked other posts which reccommend wire wool and white paint to make it stand out. After looking at it for hours, I reckon I can see a very feint RG6243, but it is so difficult to see I don't think it would pass scrutiny. I may just be willing the number to be there. Bloke I got it off doesn't have the V5 for the donor mondeo any more, but it was a 1995 car - Surely someone else has had this problem. Any ideas as to how I proceed? Help!! Also what size typeface should I be looking for? My (imaginary) number I think is about 5mm tall. Don't want to claen the area any more as I think I will destroy any remaining traces of the number...... Cheers, Alex. Quote
perksy Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 IF it is 'RG 6243' that would date your engine as DECEMBER 1994 My Zetec number is above the starter motor at the rear of the engine block. The code stampings are about 12 mm high. If you need the Ford address for the written proof, pm me Quote
deller Posted August 5, 2004 Posted August 5, 2004 I had this problem and rather tan use wire wool etc. I used hammerite rust remover (from halfords) It's not the stuff that converts rust it actually removes it. It's a green gel that you leave on for 3 hours or so. This worked a trick - removed all the corrosion but left the number intact - enough to read anyhow. Once you record the number you can file down the flange and re-stamp it. Also not sure if this is true of all zetec engines but all the zetec numbers I've come across have 5 digits and two prefix letters. Paul Quote
Comical Engineer Posted August 6, 2004 Author Posted August 6, 2004 Cheers - I'll pop to halfords at lunch time.....wish me luck. Quote
peterg Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 if it was a '1995' car then the engine would have almost certainly been made in the latter half of '94...manufacturers will start making '2005' model cars Sept/Oct if Chrysler & VW are anything to go by Quote
