jos Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Whats the best way to remove 1) a 2.ol pinto engine from an e reg sierra 2) same engine with gearbox. I assume it starts with an engine crane but do I use chains, or hooks, and where do the chains or hooks go? Quote
Stevo Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 You could use a crane or a block and tackle. Removing the engine and gearbox in a oner is the best option in my opinion. The gearbox will leak oil everywhere when you remove the propshaft so don't do it on your drive (unless you are planning to get a new one) and put lots of old carpet underneith as no matter how hard you try to catch the oil there will still be enough to make a mess afterwards. I used nylon rope to wrap around the engine and hooking onto the hook of the block and tackle. Not a tough job but is really messy and ideally requires two people. Much harder to put the engine into the westy but only because there is less room in the engine bay. Stevo Quote
jos Posted August 2, 2004 Author Posted August 2, 2004 so there are no useful hooks to use. Bum Basically just get something (sturdy) to sling underneath and hoist it out. How heavy is the engine and gearbox?? 200kg? Quote
darthurs Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 Tie the rope/chain to the engine mounts. If you leave the mount on and hook your rope/chain under each side you should be able the tilt the engine and gearbox to make it easier when lifting it out. Some toe rope should do the trick. Some times there are brackets, front and back of the engine for lifting the engine with. I would suggest trying to drain most of the gearbox oil and engine oil before lifting the whole thing out. I think you are about right with the weight. Dan Quote
Enterpryse Posted August 2, 2004 Posted August 2, 2004 My Pinto had lifting eyes at both ends of the engine. Otherwise use the old seatbelt straps to sling the lump. I found it useful to add a third strop to/from the hoists lifting eye to the back of the gear box as it allowed some adjustment on the angle the engne was tilted at during the removal. Take the prop off (and chuck it away), and bung gearbox O/P with clean rag and then cable tie a poly bag over the end. Engine and gearbox out in one. An easy but dirty job, bit like me I suppose Quote
predawson Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Hi, Presumably this is a donor vehicle. If you won't need the shell afterwards then cut away all the metal around the engine bay using an angle grinder to give yourself loads of room. particularly the strut across the front. Quote
jos Posted August 3, 2004 Author Posted August 3, 2004 Nice one, many thanks folks I think I'll use either the tow rope idea or chains rather than seatbelts, and may even use the angle grinder idea. Thanks once again Quote
Bob Green Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 I use a well balanced strop (at the front and rear) around the Camshaft to lift the Engine and Gearbox. Never had a problem doing it this way. Quote

I did it this way - defo recomend it! Just chop off the slam panel and front valence - see second pic. You then don't need to lift the engine/gearbox very far, just enough to clear the mounts. Then push the remains of the car out of the way HTH Ian Quote
worzel Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Wow! - you'll need a good welder to get the Sierra back on the road Nice job Quote
