Wanting to set up a decent web site for a new business venture for next summer....

how much should i be looking at paying for a well designed site that combines multimedia, small forum for FAQ's and videos etc?

One quote i've had from a kid whos just graduated from uni was 1500ukp

does this seem reasonable for this kind of site??

>Price includes the following:

>

>1. Accomodation page plus

>(i.)links to what's included in vacation packages.

>(ii.)photo pop-ups showing accomodation and facilities.

>(iii.)other extras relating to the vacation experience.

>

>2. Simple interactive maps and trail routes with hot spots linking to video archives of bike trails.

>

>3. Contact page including email form.

>

>4. Equipment section with links and photo pop-ups showing individual pieces in more detail.

>

>5. Available tours plus interactive itineries - again linking route sites with archive videos or photos.

>

>6. Workshop section

>

>7. Events calender with links to separate pages detailing events.

>

>8. Media section with links to both photo and video archives plus pop-ups of thumbnail images and video footage.

>

>9. Yahoo user group/forum set-up for visitor feedback.

>

>10. Installation of site visitor tracking system.

>

>11. User Agreement / Terms & Conditions page.

>

>12. News/Diary page containing your own thoughts and comments relating to the business, special package offers etc. (This section will be set-up to allow you to update the diary information yourself as simply as logging into an Internet account like hotmail).

>

>13. Simple search engine submission entry to Yahoo and Google.  No placement guarentees.

>

>14. Domain name transfer/register (.com/.net or .co.uk) plus 1 years webspace on a secure and UK reliable server.(Location of server will not affect access speeds to your site from users outside the UK).

>

>15. Company name generation.

>

>16. Brand/Company Identity. (Business Logo and font).

Before getting anybody to design a site for you, take a look at Jakob Nielsen's  usability website.  Top 10 mistakes here

Biggest problem I have ever encountered is poor definition of what completes the contract / project between you both.

Usually centred around the 'pretty' bits of the site where the client always wants a quick tweak for free or stall paying the designer. Actual content of the wordy bits is easy and you'll probably end up supplying that yourself anyway.

Maybe I should mention that I 'aint a web designer, as you can see from my own site, but have managed pleny of related projects.

No doubt someone will be along in a mo to say this is c**p but what you are asking for is straight forward from what I can see.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

It seems like you are getting a lot for your money, but what is the quality going to be like. And there isn't the same come back if your not happy with things as it doesn't sound like a registered company that you are dealing with.

I know that we do content managed website where we supply you with the frame work and then give you the tools to manage the site yourself. The tools are easy to use and there are no ties with us if you need a change making. Usually you will want to make small changes to the sites content over time and these can add up if you have to keep paying for them. We have even gone to the extent of allowing the user to restructure the pages and flow of the site.

Like I say it is up to you how much you want to pay and how you want the site to look.

I would suggest getting some examples of work he has done before and seeing if you like the style.

Hope this help.

Content Managed Websites

This is one end of the spectrum.

Find someone who has been recommended. It's not always true that you get what you pay for but experience counts for a lot. There is much more to putting an effective web site together than a few pretty pictures - a good ranking on the search engines for one thing, which isn't achieved these days in 10 minutes of work.

Do your homework - what do you want the site to do and why? Is it because it's needed or because you think it's needed. How are you going to keep the site up to date? Do you have to make the site "accessible"? What about cross-browser issues?

Speak to a number of site developers and their clients but don't rush into a decision. It's better to spend £5k wisely than throw £1k away. Oh, and good luck!

Cheers

My son who is studying computing at university can build the site as requested for alot less than your quoted amount which can again be negotiated on completion. Cost of domain name and space would be prefered upfront and then the remainder settled in stages. During development changes can be incorporated at minimal cost.

www.ginandjuicelax.com is a good example of his work-his email address is: jamesacton007@hotmail.com if you would like to contact him.

I know he is good at what he does and he won't rip you off. He is trying to get more business at the moment to build his portfolio up but take a look.

I know its a competitive market so its worth shopping around.

Not wanting to put a damper on his efforts (nice looking site), but this site is a great example supporting my comments in my earlier posting (first para). Search engines won't be able to index the site effectively - fine for a community/personal site but not so great for a commercial one.

The underlying code on a web site is all important - it doesn't affect just the presentation.
