geofff Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 Hi, Just removed 4 out of 6 halfshafts with a slide hammer which doesn't really fit - the bracket doesn't bolt onto the hub squarely but takes the slide hammer off at an angle. The remaining two are giving me grief. I spent money on that slide hammer! Anyone know how to knock up a bracket that will fit the slide hammer and the hub? I did a search - this board really works BTW - and someone recomended using the four retaining plate screws the other way round. Anyone successfully used this technique? I like the sound of it. Enterpryse Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 MMMmmmmmmmmmm maybe 3 cars ?! Geoff, best elaborate a bit. Why do you think you've got 6 half shafts? Quote
geofff Posted July 25, 2004 Author Posted July 25, 2004 Hi Enterpryse, I bought my first axle a few months ago. Stripped it and modified by WF with the kit. 3.89 diff. In order to get a 3.54 diff I purchased 3 axles (one mk1 and two mk 2's - one with half shafts and one without) from an ex WF owner in Birmingham yesterday. I started stripping them today. I've got a buyer for one axle with half shafts out and I want one which leaves one banjo casing and a 3.54 diff spare. Just got a sticky halfshaft that's proving a pain. I'm building two cars but second is SeiW - hopefully Megablade. Ta Geoff Quote
S8ight Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 just bolt an old steel wheel on and belt it with an fbh Quote
geofff Posted July 27, 2004 Author Posted July 27, 2004 Hi S8ight, The four retaining nuts worked a treat! Then the slide hammer did the rest. I'm looking at this mk1 axle and apart from the drum backing plates it looks exactly the same as the two mk2's. Is that correct? Ta Geoff Quote
injidup Posted July 27, 2004 Posted July 27, 2004 Make sure the diff pinion flange is off a Mk.1 - the Mk. 2 won't fit into the transmission tunnel as it's too wide. Even the Mk.1 is very close to the driver's side chassis! I know that's not quite what you asked, but may be helpful! Kev. SE, 2-litre Nissan, Western Australia My Webpage Quote
geofff Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 Hi Kev, I worked that one out after fitting the first axle a couple of weeks back. I wondered why it wasn't going in then saw that it was fouling on the chassis. Then I decided to read the manual and noticed the comment about the reduced diameter diff flange. I got one from Tran-X in the end. The mk1 axle that I got as part of a job lot already had its flange removed. Nice website by the way. You've got a bit further along in half the time as well. My school reports always said 'Must try harder'. Ta Geoff Quote
