Big Bad Ben Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 It's time for my Westie to have it's first MOT with me - I'm little bit worried because I've only ever had to put 'conventional' cars through one before. Are there any Birmingham/Black country owners who can recommend me an MOT station with Westfield/kit car experience? Also, I think it's about time I went to a local meet - is the black country meet at The Sun Inn in Romsley again? It was being refurbished a while ago... Bostin BBB Quote
v7slr Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Oh yes there most certainly is. You'll be wanting: Stourbridge MOT Centre Junction Road Audnam Stourbridge Telephone (Graham) on: 01384 375671 Tell him Nig in the blue Caterham sent you. Graham bought this place last year and is intending to specialise in kit cars. The place may not look much but it's the people inside that count, and Graham is on the road to purchasing some really decent equipment. As it stands, they are aware of the problems with emissions (particularly) and will do everything they can to get you through. They will either help you directly, or in my case, give me the space to juggle with the map until I meet the emissions requirements. If you go, ask to see the "downstairs". This is where Graham has a number of Mk 1 Escort bodyshells that are in for respray to be ready for the Historic Rallying championships. His standard of workmanship is top dollar. Quote
Nutter Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 BBB Let me know how you get on with the emissions Nutter Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 I have heard :fingerscrossed: that kit cars over a certain age (my Westie is a '96, and the engine's older) only have a visible smoke test at MOT - this is the kind of thing I mean when I say I want an MOT station that's familiar with kit cars - so that I don't have to argue with them about this stuff... EDIT: See here and right-click, save as this pdf file from timd's website Visible-smoke test only for 'amateur-built' cars... Quote
v7slr Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Certainly that is most people's understanding too, so why not give Graham a call and have a chat with him? He's a normal bloke and would welcome the call I'm sure. Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 Willdo Nig - in fact, the forecast's nice for this weekend, so I might pop over and see him... Quote
v7slr Posted July 22, 2004 Posted July 22, 2004 Wish I had the time to come over too, but I've got to get "things" sorted before my inlaws come over from Poland for a week. Good luck. Let us know how you get on. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 23, 2004 Posted July 23, 2004 I used a place by work here in Witton. Great, no problems. Think they are called Mark Price or something. Just do MOT's, one bay only. You have to book well in advance though. As for emissions - 'Do you want me to tell you what they are?, they don't need testing as its a kit car' Result with no discussion, and my car is a '96 on an N aged plate. They were 1% CO and 200 HC ppm BTW. Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted July 31, 2004 Author Posted July 31, 2004 Thanks folks - took the westy to Graham's place in Stourbridge - top bloke. The guy who carried out the MOT was a friendly chap as well. Both of them were very knowledgable on the kit car front too. No fuss, in and out within half an hour, and best of all - PASSED FIRST TIME What a relief! No need for emissions testing by the way - apparently the visible smoke test is fine for kit cars with build dates up to 1998... Quote
v7slr Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 Great..!! Did you tell them I sent you? By the way, if you got a signature of "Tarrant" on your MoT cert, you might be interested to learn that he is the cousin of Chris Tarrant and they are investigating whether there is any possibility of Chris performing an official "opening" at some time, or commissioning of one/some of their rally cars. I only found out about the Chris Tarrant link when I enquired why the chap hadn't got a Black Country accent as the rest of them had. Quote
Nutter Posted August 1, 2004 Posted August 1, 2004 No need for emissions testing by the way - apparently the visible smoke test is fine for kit cars with build dates up to 1998... Anybody know about a build date of 2000 with a 1974 block? Quote
Big Bad Ben Posted August 1, 2004 Author Posted August 1, 2004 I did tell them you sent me Nig, and the certificate is signed by a Mr Tarrant - now there's a claim to fame Anybody know about a build date of 2000 with a 1974 block? I presume the rules mean date of registration, but I expect they're open to interpretation... Quote
